AN talkin about these guns i dint know the real guns were auto as i was talkin to a gent who has a 1/96th scale tiger an he is a member of the HMS TIGER ASSOIATION an he talks to some of the real crew members that are still alive an the big 6inch guns could fire at a rate of 30 to 40 rounds a minute which is quite a lot considering the gun size an the small 3inch guns were auto also an could fire 90 to 120 rounds a minute cor thats throwin the metal
chris

At that rate the guns would heat up so badly, the accuracy would go to Hell and all they would be doing is throwing metal and not hitting their intended target. LOL :tongue-out3: Rick H.

HI Rick perhaps that was the idea lol scare the hell out of the enamy with shells droppin all over an you may get lucky hits lol but thats what i was told mind you thinkin back they did say when they worked an presume thats just in theory as i cant see the R/N melting their gun barrells can you ? lol BUT Rick lookin at a close up pics of the guns it looks to me that they have cooling pipes around the barrels but i may be wrong
chris

Rather like the Katyusha rocket launcher, just saturated the area and terrified the Germans.:smiling3:

THATS Right John an Rick ive put on here a real pic of them 6inch guns on tiger an if you zoom in on the barrels they look like there are cooling pipes around the gun barrels pic below so maybe they could fire at that rate without melting the gun barrels 1407420.jpg

More info here re the 6 inch Naval Guns -
6 inch qf

Section 2 - "Gun Characteristics" - Note 1 at the end mentions how these guns were cooled.

Near the bottom of the page, there are some piccies including the shell fired - compared to a .303 case.

HTH.

Paul.

Uniform accuracy requires all things to be consistent....and the other question I have is the magazine capacity to feed all these guns at a sustained rate of fire @ 90 to 120 RPM and the speed at which the ammo elevator travels and the ability of the crew to keep it full.........I'm having trouble grasping this in real time. If the rate of fire is something that the guns are capable of as a maximum parameter in their design concept, I'm ok with that.....but one and a half to 2 rounds per second is just (in my mind) not a practical working reality for any length of time in a combat situation. Cheers, Rick H.

WELL Rick thats what i thought when i was first told as i dint even think the guns were auto an the rate of fire i could not beleive either an i may have got this wrong about this as it was some months ago that the tiger gent told me so ive emailed him to ask again if i have got it right now untill i hear from him we will put a big ? on this ok with you an hold on i think he has just emailed me i'll go offline an see but Rick im glad you are questioning this as i could not beleive it anyway i'll have a look at his email an sorry Rick it was Bob the stug email an not the tiger gent so we will have to wait Rick

In Paul’s link the ROF is given as 15-20 rpm.......the ammo hoists held about 80 seconds of ammo....its an interesting read.

Thread owner
WELL ive heard back from the gent in tiger assoation an yes i got it wrong guys this what he said below

6" guns 15-20 RPM, fully automatic, but rarely worked, propeberly the pipes you see along side is part of the range gear, measuring projectile speed, air cooled 3" 90 RPM but again not reliable
so sorry guys to misinform you all my apolliegies
chris

No probs Chris. I think the pipes are the gun coolant as the article says they still got too hot on maximum twenty second bursts and had to be spray cooled.....

Thread owner
That sounds a little more realistic Tim. Rick H.
an yes you are right Rick sorry i got it wrong but gettin old duh lol
chris ps but thanks for qeustioning it as i talked to the gent an it was nice to have chat with him again
ATB Rick

Wow. That's a pretty fast traverse for a 171 ton turret. I remember WWII videos of carriers & cruisers mostly 40mm & 5" AA against Japanese aircraft & can understand why these rates of fire would be necessary. The sky would be almost black w/flak. Can only imagine the tonnage volume of ammo expended in extended engagements w/squadrons of aircraft. PaulE

No sweat Chris........we're only human after all. Probably a good thing, if they actually fired that fast and you managed to get your Tiger's guns to shoot like that, the Coppers would be after you for having a "Floating" Machine Gun!! ;) Rick H.
