i always remembered this one from waaaaaaaaaay back in the day......always used to see it in the Airfix catalogue, original artwork showed it in white, was always one of those i fancied doing but never did......was always more interested in european theatre back then, but i bought this a while back simply cos i got it cheap in one of Airfix's black friday sales

this was 'new tool' back in 1965!!...............i hate masking and this looks as bad as anything the Luftwaffe used!

Wow....not a lot of parts there, so I hope the fit is OK.....should be a fun little build!

original artwork showed it in white
I am under the impression that this was a common misconception of Japanese aircraft colours, ca. the 1960s–70s. Matchbox’s A6M Zero also showed it in that scheme, and I still have it somewhere painted like that.

the misconception is that up to early years of WW2 standard scheme for Japanese Navy aircraft was a light grey, which i guess from a distance would be mistaken for a weathered white

White Zeroes? Grey zeroes? Ooor, very pale brown / hemp Zeroes. Actual research tends toward the latter...
But that's the Navy, and the 'Dinah' is Army, who had their own different set of colours

Then, of course, both the Zero and 'Dinah' are Mitsubishi designs so who knows if they had different paint shops
Probably

Note, there's the 'pale' scheme right there on the box

yeah......but what sort of research did Airfix do back in '65 when this was released?........'navy?, army?, whatever....its Japanese' would probably been the call..........pictures would have shown aircraft to be light coloured so they might have guessed white back then

Research was much more difficult in 1965 I would think. Janes publications were about it....l....

Fill and sand? This kit is almost as old as me, and I only just fit together
You going OOB or adding interior, because there's a lot of glazing there

And I doubt Janes did colour matching! We're spoilt these days with teh intraweb
...and imperfect translations of original documents, vociferous arguements and unwavering beliefs...
Ooh, as well as the 'white Dinah', what about the 'white Val'? Now that's a great box art

nope......they went in the bin 60 seconds after the box were opened!............looked like nothing human!.....might see whats in the spares box

Hi Paul
That is definitely a golden oldie.
.i want this to be a bit of a speed build
... not speedy with all the filling and sanding :rolling:
It is nice to see these ancient kits actually built rather than just gathering dust.

its not that old.....current style red box....certainly not collectable.......i got it in an Airfix black friday sale a couple of years ago

Wow 1965 I can remember my mate got it as his birthday present (we were 10)and being so envious he built it and if I rember within weeks it was suspended from his mums washing line and shot at with a gat gun I cant think why but I hardly missed when it was my turn to take a shot, the things we did back then never considered it was a bit iffy saying that though I never saw any one eyed badly mamed kids going about. well, sorry to say but this is filed under 'bin'.......not often i give up on something, i dont like to admit defeat

Airfix need to sell off the tooling as scrap or use it as a boat anchor!

off to the stash for something else!

TBF it did look abit of a sanding job. I'll remember to give that one a wide berth. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers John.
