discussion H.M.S. Hood At Sea. Denmark Straits. 23th May 1941.

I've finally finished this 1/400 Heller model of the Hood and put her on a seascape. I already knew the kit needed a lot of work, but although a difficult build, I had great satisfaction working on it and getting the ship into an acceptable standard. I've left the main gun's protective end caps in place. These will be removed shortly in order to deal with the German 'Upstart'
The base is a piece of scrap polystyrene to which I spread on some gash ceiling artex which I found in the shed. Then painted it and added clear silicone to liven up the waater!

Unashamedly, there are far too many pictures, so I've split them between B/W and colour.

Hood was called 'The biggest submarine in the world' due to her loosing a load of freeboard after the addition of thicker armour. I have tried to model her sitting very low in the water, to try and show this rather unwelcome characteristic!
The decks are wet, but the pictures haven't caught it.


Here she is on her way to her disastrous encounter with Bismark. She was blown apart by Bismark's 5th. salvo, after just a short time into the engagement. Of the 1418 sailors aboard the British Battleship, only 3 survived to be picked up by a British destroyer.

There is absolutely no need to apologise for too many photos when the quality is as good as what you have on display here.

Yet again, another brilliant model from your good self. If I can get a quarter that good then I will be very happy indeed.

Chris. I read that the ensign was over 24ft. in length and was only hoisted when really necessary. It was presumably raised the following day - Unfortunately for the last time......

Right or wrong, it's too late to fix the thing on now......or is it?
