Not that I know of, we did think of that, for a little fellow he does seem quite active.Is there a bird rescue place near you? If so, it would probably be better to take him there, rather than releasing him yourself. Could well be he’s weakened, ill or not really capable of taking care of himself just yet.
Agree John. The cream stripe that threw me is the edges of the mouth. When open it says “place food in here” to the parentsLooks like a young blackbird, the parents tend to "loose " them when they reach that stage. Mealy worms soaked in water will keep him more than happy .Kind of you to take him in
