One of my local pubs was next door to a RAF/USAAF base during the war and has a small display of contemporary photographs. This one troubles me though!

I can see two….Hurricanes, not spits, and very early ones (two blade props), so not 1944…..

The painting (mirrored camouflage) and markings (upper-wing roundels in four colours) also give away that it’s not a picture from 1944. I gather those roundels were only used from 1937–39.

Exactly! Early years roundels, two bladed props, early cam scheme, distinctive shape - ooh, somebody had a brain fart! (Beautiful calligraphy though!) And the ID skills of the IWM also leave much to be desired.

You need to speak to the Imperial War Museum whose online media team uploaded a video titled ''spitfires'' which contained only Hurricanes.
Probably scripted by a youngster with a degree in "media studies".

You can imagine the thought process.
It's got wings - it's a plane!
It's a Black and white pic. - Gotta be Second World War!
Roundels and camo - Oh it's gonna be a spitfire!!
Job done, back to the Love Island website!!!

With all this disinformation no wonder all my Asian cousins think every British plane is a Spitfire. :rolling: :smiling6:

Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito, Lancaster... What's the difference? Just the number of Merlins flying in formation...

Of course, to every Luftwaffe pilot in the battle of Britain, every British fighter (especially the one's that shot them down) WAS a Spitfire

Just like the average GI calling any German tank they encounter a Tiger even if none were posted in that sector.
