Scale Model Shop

Latest Acquisitions (2023)

I rarely use anything below a size 1 for figure painting Iain. If the brush is too small then the paint dries too quickly and doesn’t flow off the brush properly…..the big figure painting secrets are properly thinned paint and an unloaded brush….took me a long time to crack that…..

I'll let you know when I get there Tim! ;)

Hi all

So some more arrivals in the past week, albeit no kits.

The stand is to help with an upcoming and for for me a very different subject.

As I have the Tamiya Raiden on the go and a Tamiya Zero in the stash, I thought I'd splash out on some semi-decent Hinomaru's rather than put up with the Tamiya 'stickers'.

The Albions Alloys sanding needles were bought to sort out the join on the Raiden's wings and have already proved their worth (pics to follow). Had heard good things about their products and was proved right.

I had come across the book early on in the build but they were going stupid prices....£80-£100, with £30 common and yet a search the other day found this for only £17 delivered and it appears to have been brand new. Although it's probably a bit late in the day for the build, I have come across a couple of useful shots!

I hope, anyway :) I used to clean my airbrush with pipe cleaners, but the ones I had ran out twenty years ago or so, as in the time since did the smoking shops where I could buy them. It took until last week to realise you can probably buy them online now … With a bit of luck, these will make it a lot easier to get the paint out of my airbrush.

Whilst on holiday in South Devon the wife decided to go clothes shopping and I found a lovely family run model shop in Newton Abbott where a great discussion was had and the mothsflew out of my wallet to purchase the above, loving this holiday so far.

Make sure you get any loose bits of fluff off them first Jakko - a rinse in whatever cleaner you're using should work.

I take it you mean Bekra Models?... It's my local Model shop,(about 15 minutes away), been going there for years, good range of stock and,as you say, family run .. a great atmosphere and they're always willing to help as much as they can :thumb2:.

Spot on Andy, wish we had somewhere like that 15 minutes from home in Hemel Hempstead!

Lovely part of the country having never stayed around the area previously. We are quite jealous of your scenery and coastline and are going to Brixham tomorrow for a look see. Staying in a very nice lodge with a hot tub at Finlake Resort.

Blimey!!.... Finlake, know it well!!....
.... That's about 5 mins from us..."Heathfield"!!

My recent truck build sapped a few resources so I've stocked up on a few things

I'm trying out some new chrome since I'm almost out of Alclad . Fingers crossed its a bit more durable!

And since that lot wasn't quite enough to qualify for free shipping, a couple of kits accidentally fell into my basket again :smiling5:

Hopefully they should work well together

Andy, I love that Faun L900! I wouldn't mind doing one of those in 1-87 scale.....all the resin kits I have seen so far are sub standard at best, so I am waiting for a better rendering before parting with my hard earned cash! :thumb2:

Thank you .. i am struggling with the finer details on 1/35 figures .. particularly the eyes / eyebrows etc .. i had assumed a smaller brush .. along with a couple of pairs of glasses lol .

Slightly better with the 10/0 as opposed to the 5/0 i was using .. but it will take time and practise i guess .. water paint doesn't cover that well so i might try enamel .

Rick, I know this is way off your scale but by all accounts it's a great kit. I like that it includes 3 sets of rear springs for depicting different amounts of load sag.

Slightly concerned that there's a load of brass tubing and a jig for forming it into something. Sounds like a recipe for disaster :smiling5:

I normally used them “wet”, to get paint out of difficult corners and pipework. Never had any trouble with bits being left behind in the airbrush, but maybe these modern-day ones aren’t as high-quality as my old ones so I’ll keep an eye out for loose bits ;)

Have to agree, i only go to a zero or a 4/0 (which it isn't really - if that makes sense) and that's just for pupils. The tip of a brush that small (50/0) will be bigger than itself due to the paint on it :rolling:

I find I can relatively easily do eyeballs on 28mm figures with a quality size 1 brush. It’s the sharpness of the tip rather than the size of the brush that counts……mind you, I don’t put much detail in at that scale ;)
Worth remembering that not all brush sizes are the same. My best brush size one Raphael’s have bristles about three times the length of those my workhorse Rosemary and Co size ones…..approximately number six on the OP brush picture…..
Stopping now….not the right place for this!
