What's on the Bench 2024

I like those Hobby Boss quick-build planes. Detail is quite good, except for the cockpit, but it’s all very few parts. I’d say they would make ideal starter kits for children, as well as uncomplicated ones for jaded modellers ;)

Do some more work and got it to the painting stage. I might try out my Airbrush my wife bought me on this. She found one that’s used for makeup I’m wondering what it will do on a model. Some progress on the D8. Provided comparison D7s w/various bulldozer attachments. D7s were company level & D8s were battalion level.

This GHQ kit went together beautifully so far.

Yes I agree Jakko. My Hobby Farm keeps growing and takes a lot of my time these days but I still have a big Appetite to build models and these I think will fit the bill till winter hits.

Never built this one Paul. Looks better than the Woodlands one

Okay, this went less well than expected :(

When I removed the masks, the ones for the stars and the 7s were stuck much more strongly than I thought they would be, and so I had to peel and scratch them off with a knife — with the results shown above.

In retrospect, the cause is obvious. I had used PVA(-like) woodworking glue to stick them on, but hadn’t bothered to check the exact type. Turns out this particular bottle is intended for in- and outdoor use, and extra strong, which apparently makes it stick to paint much better than I thought it would. I’ve never had this happen in the past when I used straight PVA glue, with which the masks just peel off the model and leave nothing behind. The obvious lesson is to pay more attention to the glue next time :)

Nothing to do but fix it with a brush:

More slow progress:

Mostly trying to enhance the dirt effects and painting details, like the tyres, machine guns, tow cable, etc. The 7 in the star is hand-painted, and though you can’t see it in these photos, I also added a yellow 7 on the engine doors in the back of the hull and yellow bands on the air cleaners under the rear hull overhang, because an expert (and I mean it) on Shermans informed me that these tanks had those.

I’ve also begun assembling a set of MiniArt tracks, but that’s not a quick job either. It’s far from the worst set of tracks I’ve ever built, but I just don’t much like the way they go together. Currently at 30 links out of 168 or so …

Finally, a successful rigging. Awaiting the adhesive to dry.

.......and it just fits on the trailer!

I kind of wish there was a D8 (and a D6) in 1:35 …

While I wait for that to be released, I’m still trying to enhance the realism of the mud effects on the M4:

And steadily building the track:

That’s link 52 about to go in … only 27 left on this one, and 79 on the other :rolling:

So as I'm new here I thought I should post up some pictures of my current projects/bench 'stuff' - apologies if this is the wrong thread.

So this is my workspace - freshly tidied just for you guys - yes I do have OCD :smiling:

With some of my stash above...

Current build (a hopefully mojo restoring OBB basic build) is an old Tamiya Late production Sherman. (The wingtip tanks are for a PM models F-5A)

IMG-9553.jpg

A couple of stalled builds - A Tamiya Tiger 1 (The indy tracks scare the crap out of me) and Airfix's K2/Y Ambulance.

I also have some winged things on the go...

And this F-5A, on a pile of other kits awaiting my possible Iranian Air Force project.

When not working in my room, I do have one of these little Humbrol workstation things, for when I'm sat out in the garden or in the kitchen etc. It's quite useful.

Well that's all from my bench for a mo - I need to go and feed the Scutters.

Ahhh, I can see your problem.

Too tidy by far!!

Makes my stash of two look positively lonely!!

Don't worry, it won't stay that way for long!

I have another 50 odd in the garage... ;) to be honest, it's far too many and the one piece of advice I'd give to any new modeller is to not let it get above 10 - you'll always be able to buy most kits! I do intend to try and ebay a good few of them in the future.

Tracks are good for when waiting for paint/adhesives to dry. Pick it up & set it aside.

I assume you mean the indy link tracks for the Tiger? That's a good idea actually - thanks! :thumb2:

I was planning on building up in a few sections (Bottoms, ends and top) so that I could remove it all and then paint them - I bought some slow setting glue for the process. I'll give it a go, and I'm sure I'll be okay once I get my head around it, it's just getting over that brick wall. I do need to finish the sticky back Zimmerit as well (just the turret to finish).

Looks good Arnold. Seriously impressed by the set of MASH DVDs on the shelf though. One of my favourite series. Currently rewatching it every day when I have breakfast. Rather have it without the laughter track though, as I remember it from Beeb two back in the day.

You can join The Tidy Bench Club (TBC). A very prestigious club. Many have applied for membership but few have been admitted. Our standards are very high and despite trying all manner of underhand ploys including bribery, threats and even the offer of loose women we remain true to our standards.
Major U P MacSporran retired. (TBC president)

Thanks Tim. Oh you can't beat a bit of M*A*S*H :smiling: - a truly fabulous comedy drama. I have all the series - I got one for each birthday & xmas for about five years! Watched them to death. I could do without the canned laugher too though, never been a fan of that.

LOL!!!! I'm honoured to be part of such a prestigious club - I can't work in a mess. I'd probably even get the loose women to clean for me lol!
