This will be my next build. An aeroplane which I have wanted to build for many years. The new Airfix kits have excellent reviews and so now seemed a good time. I have a personal connection to the Buccaneer as my father was one of the designers. My family moved to Brough, where the Blackburn factory was, from London in the mid 1950s. Dad was transferred there to work on the design team. The Buccaneers were built at Brough but the completed planes were taken to Holme-on-Spalding-Moor where the runway was more suitable. As children we would ride our bikes alongside, much to the annoyance of the escort!

Blackburn's chief test pilot was a guy called Derek Whitehead, a very flamboyant character. As a young lad he was my hero and once he let me sit in the pilot's seat of a Buccaneer :tongue-out3:

I have chosen plane XV336, no 800 Naval Air Squadron, stationed on HMS Eagle during the summer of 1971. At that time HMS Eagle had 14 Buccaneers on board. HMS Eagle, the sister ship to HMS Ark Royal, was an Audacious class aircraft carrier built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast. The keel was laid down in 1942, she was launched by Princess Elizabeth in 1946 and completed in 1951. She was originally built to take 60 aircraft but by 1971 she carried only 39. She was one of the last "big carriers" and was decommissioned in 1972 and her Buccaneers were transferred to the RAF.

My plan is to show the plane on a section of flight deck, all "folded up", wings, air brakes and nose cone.

The kit and some aftermarket stuff.

I got the kit cheap, second hand, and strangely there were two lower bodies??

I bought two sets of FOD covers, one PE and one resin. The resin will probably be easier to work with but I wanted the ladders in the PE set.

Anyway that's my plan. I hope some of you will join me on what will undoubtedly be a slow build - as mine always are :rolling:

Fancied building one of these myself, will be watching with interest.

Nice choice!

It's a really nice kit, but it has a few 'gotcha's', the worse being the fit around the nose to fuselage and the intakes.

Nice intro Jim. I find I'm having to eat my words a bit here!! As much as I say I'm not a big fan of Zoomies. The Bucc. Is one of those I do like. It's an amazing machine.
In 1971, my ship, HMS Albion was in company with the Eagle out the Far East. We covered the withdrawal of Singapore and sailed in company back to the UK. So I will be following your build with great interest.
Watched the Bucc's on many occasion using our splash target and loved there low level flying ability. It was always rumoured that pilots could and did get sea sick when they were down wave hopping with their doppler radar locking onto the wave swells inducing the sea sickness!!!
So, really looking forward to watching this come together. :thumb2:

HI Jim yes i'll be lookin in from time to time in catch up bids as ive always liked the buck an ive built one long ago an if i remember mine had a gold nose cone on it an that was a airfix kits
so when will you start as its easy to miss builds on this very popular site ?

Always wanted to build a Buccaneer, but the 1/48 ones are rather expensive!
I'm looking forward to watching you get this one together.:thumb2:
Thats quite a roll call of Classic Carriers you've mentioned there! Coming from Plymouth, with it's strong Navy connections, the likes of Ark Royal,Eagle etc bring back strong, boyhood memories:hugging-face:.

Thanks Mark. It's reckoned to be a good kit.

Cheers and thanks for the warning. Noted on the instructions.

Must have been a great experience. The Bucc's low level abilities were very special.

Totally agree Chris. Far too much happening on the forum to keep up. I've made a start :thumb2:

Hi Andy. I did consider the 1/48 kit but as you say it is expensive and with a bit of aftermarket stuff more than I was willing to pay.
I will pull up a seat if I may.
You are more than welcome. I'll put the kettle on and open the biccies.

A start has been made. As usual the seats and cockpit are tackled first. There is a lot to go onto the seats from the 3D Quinta set.
P1070655.JPG

Some moulded detail needed removing. Left seat done, right to do.
P1070656.JPG

A fair number of decals to go onto the cockpit wall. In a few places I fitted small pieces of very thin styrene to give the decals something to "grip" onto.

Before I go any further I want to look at the folded nose cone. There isn't an after market kit so it will be saw off the nose and scratch the interior. Looking at it it will have to be very, very simplified, especially given the scale and my skills.
Here's what I'm aiming for.

HI Jim will you fit a hinge so the nose cone can be open or closed ?

Nice start Jim.

It seems like you have plenty of goodies to add and much scratching ahead for the folded display, so I'll follow along.

I have one of these in the stash, I was amazed at the box size, I could fit four original Airfix Buccaneer kits inside!

I'll follow along to see how it goes together, then I can apply your experience to my build! Ha!

Miko (mine will be red white and blue, naturally)

Thanks for all your positive posts - really appreciated.
Chris - I won't make the nose cone fold. It will be fixed in the folded back position.
Rick - I didn't know that was available. I have managed to scratch a "rough" version so it will do. If I'd known that it was available I think I would have gone down the after market route.
