    Is this to go inside the balloon where it won't be seen? If so, why not make a box using sheet polystyrene. This would be much stronger and easier to make. You could continue to use strip to make the tapered ends and the ends of your central box section would give you a solid base for the...

    6mm MDF works fine for me. I get my local hardware store to cut an 8ftx4ft sheet into rectangles 2ftx2ft, 2ftx1ft. I get four of each and I get two of each 3ftx1ft and 1ftx1ft .

    Hi Paul. Welcome aboard. I know it's a faff, but I've seen several modellers who file off the moulded chains and replace them with real chain obtained from model boat suppliers. Not done it myself, but just a thought.
