Well its been a while since my last post. Has a little set back. Not being too happy with the finish on the pilots trousers i decided to pick something up while getting a few bits from the model shop. I saw something that caught my eye... Tamiya Flat Base a sort of clear like varnish.

I inquired and asked if this is painted over the finished job to give it that flat look. Yes came the reply from both of them behind the counter. Well i got home and thought lets give it a coat or two and admire the finished result. OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how wrong they were. the whole piece that i had lovingly painted and shaded with the airbrush was now drying chalky white all over. I will have something to say when i go back next time. Endless to say i had to totally repaint the whole section, boots and all. Wasn't easy as it was fixed in place and was like painting through a key hole.

With this done again for the second time i progressed further with the office, making and adding more clocks and some leavers.

Now, I'm not quite sure what this next bit is so i have snapped it in the picture. It has a winding handle on the outside of the plane.

Been busy the last couple of weeks making good progress.... i saved the installments for you so that that you can have a bumper post. This first installment is the construction of the tank fillets. Not sure why they look like this with the sticking up bits but they are there so i duplicated them. Perhaps someone might be able to tell us the reason for this.

First of all a template had to be made of the exact shape and a trial fit was called for. Once satisfied i glued these to some thin ply with a removable tacky glue i had, this is designed for the exact purpose. (useful stuff to have in the workshop). Once this was done it was cut to shape, note the dotted lines, these are the excess allowed for the hinge folds.

Once this was cut out it was used for a template to draw around on the litho plate.

Once the hinges had been folded correctly by forming them round a piano wire the parts are then fixed into place and painted.

Andy your attention to detail continues to be outstanding. I'm looking forward to the next instalments.

This next part was a tricky piece, the cockpit panel. Plenty of cutting dremeling and trail fitting here i dint mind telling you. The fixing of the panel was also hard due to the forming of the shape and holding while the glue went off.

First of all it was fit mark and cut for a while to get the exact fit and trim. When this was achieved i cut out the opening. Then applied a couple of coats of simple everyday varnish on the inside.

Next i had to glue together two thick pieces of 4inch by1/4 stock and free hand cut a curved support with the scroll saw. This was then fixed in place and painted with acrylic paint 'old wood'.

Now came the nightmare of fitting the panel. Here are the end results. Still a little filling and sanding to do before painting. Then the leather padding can be added to finish it off. You will see that some strengthening strips have been added inside and varnished. These are also on the full scale model so they aren't out of place. The panel has an inspection window located on the right hand side above the dash, not sure why, perhaps its for added light inside the cockpit. There are still a few scratch build switches and leavers that can now be added and fitted to the skin, i will show you these on my next post.

The dynamo that is inside the cockpit has a winding handle on the outside. I have cut the skin for this and will also build this next for you to see.

Looking great Andy.

I might be wrong, (as usual) but I think the inspection panel was to enable the ground crew to see if the ammo tray was full. Bit of extra light on the dash was a bonus.

Thanks guys for your support. Ian, i did check on the position of this window and it does sit over the dash area. The hatch along side of it is situated over the amo bin. Still not sure what this window is for. I guess i will have to read up on it. I did notice though that it looks at the spare mag holder.
