Sorry i missed this yesterday, Happy birthday to your mum, i'm sure, wherever she is, she'll be shouting at you to stop making a fuss eh It would have been my dads birthday tomorrow, he passed in 2005 ... people say it gets easier Andy... i want to know when coz i'm not sure it does.

Its been a while since my last post but i have been busy on the other exhaust and i didn't want to repeat myself so i left it for a while, i have made some other progress on the lower panels and stitching... these need to be completed before the exhaust brackets can be secured. Still needs another coat of the PC10 and fuel proof so they aren't complete as yet.

Thought id better post something for you guys to see.

Progress!!! With the under carriage fitted she seems to have moved on a lot.

Exhaust brackets, these are all made from brass plate and tube and bolted through the fuse.

Wing fillets need to be made and fitted, this one is still wet with fuel proof hence the glossy look, it will mat down. Simply made from 1/16th ply with a silver duct tape backing for extra strength after gluing together with some thin CA.

Wing Walks, these were easy, just simple evergreen styrene that is grooved and then painted with Humbrol Metal paint. Ill glue these to the centre wing and add the unpainted brass pins that make the effect of the brass roundhead screws.

I made 2 sets of these but i need to dig deep as i cant find a pic that shows them both sides, spot the deliberate mistake that i have just noticed. Yes you guessed it, if i need to do both sides i need to remake another with the angle to the left, i made 2 left wing ones and no right... lets hope i don't need it as i ran out of the styrene.

tread plates

Hello Andy

I’m afraid you’ll have to make another tread plate; they are fitted to both sides. If you’ve run out of styrene why not make them from litho plate.

It’s dead easy, this is how I made them.

For some reason I can't get this picture to show but if you click the link it should be OK!

Thanks mate, i just knew you would come to the rescue bringing good news. I like your idea but it seems a lot of fiddly bits. I need to look at the original. A reproduction shows the type of plate i copied, if however, yours is the truer scale then thats what i need to do mate. Having built your masterpeice... how do you think im doing after all, you inspired me to choose this model for my tribute to the Old Dutch.

Tread plate

Don't know what goes wrong with my computer but I don't always get notifications of new posts so quite often miss things (as happened this time) so sorry for the delay.

The tread plates do have a lot more ridges; repros aren't always that accurate. This is a photo I took of the Shuttleworth SE5a, it's as near to original as you're going to get.

Just realised that you can hardly see the ridges but believe me they're there, lots of them!

The "Old Dutch" is looking really good, I'm very impressed, at 1/4 scale you can include just about every detail, weight's not an issue, especially if you don't intend to fly her.

Talking of which I think it'd be a pity not to get her into the air where she truly belongs! But I can understand your reluctance having put so much into her both physically and of course there is the emotional element to consider.

Thanks for that guys. Graham, that info is spot on mate. I went to the model shop to get some more styrene, unluckily he was out of what i was looking for, luckily i decided to try some smaller stuff and make 4 more new ones, i say luckily because once i got it home and out of the packet i found that not only was it finer but it was very coarsely ridged so in looks and feels like a no-slip plate.

Ill pop up some pics tomorrow.
