Well its been a while since i last posted so here is an update.

View attachment 31709

The engines i built had to have some spacers made, these have been attached to the Aluminium brackets that i also made. These have been bolted through the engine mount plate and screwed to the fire wall former.

View attachment 31710

The lower hinged panel has now had 3 coats of PC10, im finding that the lytho plate is taking 4 coats to get a perfect result.

View attachment 31711View attachment 31712

The tension anchor plate was made out of ply and the lower engine fastners have been carved out of hard wood, i think they look ok and do the job.

View attachment 31713View attachment 31714

The fuel tank has had 2 coats, you can see now why it needs 4.

View attachment 31715View attachment 31716View attachment 31717View attachment 31718

Here you can see my attempts at making the spare magazines and in the last pic you can see the wing strengthening tube that passes through the cockpit.

Cheers

Andy

Back from Southampton for a few days until Wednesday so i decided to get a spirt on while im home. Here is the progress for this weekend.

View attachment 32081View attachment 32082View attachment 32083View attachment 32084

The dummy engines have been fixed to the mounting plates by means of 5mm pins.

View attachment 32085View attachment 32086View attachment 32087View attachment 32088

The frame has been made and the Ply skin applied.

View attachment 32089

The gun recess stop here.

View attachment 32090View attachment 32091View attachment 32092

A piano hinge has been made from a thin strip of Lythoplate, i cut nicks into it with a scalple and then turned over to sand away the burs. I bent it around a piano wire to form the shape and then removed the wire before fixing in place. A thin layer of Squadren Green will remove the step in the hinge so it isnt visible when the next pieces of Lythoplate are added.

Cheers

Andy

Engine Trouble.

After fitting the engine cover/hood i found that the cylinder block depth and angle was not right. I checked a few pics i downloaded to get the right mount. My original was taken from the plans that show where and how the tacky moulded ones should look and be. As these are my scratch build i need to make the mods so it looks right... not too tricky but a job i would have prefered not to have to of done having finished them.

View attachment 32441

This is before i modified the blocks

View attachment 32442

And this is after, im sure you all agree, it needed to be done.

Below is my progress on the engine cover, not much as i have been away all week again. Thanks for keeping tuned in.

And here are some more engine mod shots.

Further progress on the engine section while im home.

The engine covers have all the cutouts completed now and ready for painting.

View attachment 32618View attachment 32619View attachment 32620

On each manifold there are two injection ports with isolating taps. I have made these out of the trusty Evergreen Styrene.

View attachment 32621

Various sizes are used to make the effect. Once glued together the look like this.

View attachment 32622View attachment 32623

A couple of coats of paint and they are complete.

Now that i have finished my long stint down Southampton its time to get back to some serious building of the SE5a. Progress so far, hope you like it.

I have made progress on the engine hinged covers, these have been completed with a few fixtures such as the fuel primer inlets. Please ignor the gaps between the engines and the covers, these still have to be adjusted and squared up.

Cheers

Andy

Decided to make a couple of hatches today. The Oil Filler covering hatch and another that is on the opposite side, not sure what that one is for but its there.

The Oil Filler cover is made from a few bits of scrap material.

View attachment 33212

Put together, sanded, shaped and filled it looks like this.

View attachment 33213View attachment 33214View attachment 33215View attachment 33216View attachment 33217

The cover on the other side is going to be used to hide the remote glow connection. I decided as this is a working hatch i would make it very strong so i cut it freehand out of ali plate. I made the hinge section and passed a piano wire through it and bent 90 deg angles and passed it through the fuse wall, i then used 5 min epoxy to hold it secure on the inside. The remote glow has now been fitted.
