I'm trying to find this in a plastic kit without any luck, was there ever one? Did it ever even exist ?Does anybody have a line on one? I think this is a great looking nachtjager and would love to build this

this thing had some serious firepower and the schrage music set up was intense with 4 upward firing cannons

The only kit for this type is in 1/72 and done by Italeri. There used to be a 1/48 Revell Do217 E-5 kit with a vacform conversion available but i think it's long out of production

Koster Do-217 J-2/N-1

Hi trey, Revell/Monogram did a 1/48 dornier 217 in their Pro modeller series, i think its out of production now so e-bay is probably your best hope of finding one. I think it was the standard light bomber so you would have to do a bit of conversion for the night fighter , but seeing the top job youre doing on the fw189 i dont think thats a problem!! cheers tony **** EDIT*****> trey, just found this and its in USA too! good luck mate!

Revell 1/48 Dornier Do217 E-4 Model Kit 85-5526 on eBay (end time 09-Feb-11 21:43:20 GMT)

There is/was a conversion set to make the N-2 version. It was made by "Simple Models". Like I say I don't know if you can still get them but E-bay is more than likely the place to start looking or one of the specialist shops such as Revell/Monogram 1/48 Dornier Do217E-4 German WW2 Bomber Kit (85-5526) | Antics Online Model Shop

Her is a link to a review of the conversion set: Dornier Do 217N-2 Night Fighter Conversion Review by Mike Powlen (Simple Models 1/48)

It does look a nice aircraft. Good luck with the hunt.

Hannants sell the Revell Dornier 217E 1/48 scale for£26.99.There site says non in stock but some due in.I saw one in my local model shop last Saturday.I remember because I almost bought it.So it should still be available.for a night fighter conversion you could Go on Hannants web site and use their search Thingy.Or try eBay as suggested.

Mike West of Lone Star Models is supposed to have brought out a Do217 N2 resin conversion apparently

It'll be interesting to see how you get on with the vac form stuff. Personally I can't stand the stuff but a lot of rarer conversion bits can only be purchased in this medium.

Just seeing how you get the bits off the backing will be interesting to me.

Richard never done vac form so this is unchartered territory for me . From what little research I've done it does not seem to be a popular media to deal with so I'm very apprehensive about it. This aircraft has always been a must do in 1/48 for me and this was the only game in town so blindly I dive in with both feet lol wish me luck!

Funniest thing i've read on here all week

Have you always had masochistic tendancies Dave or are you just wanting others to suffer along with you :)

I'm out of the loop on the Hannants thing but from the jist of it it sounds hilarious

Can't see what the problem is with Hannants search. I've always found what i've searched for lol

Ive not had a problem using Hannants site either.I get a feeling that they are not popular with some people who use this site?.personally ive never had a problem with them apart from one time at their old shop next to Colindale tube station. One of their staff was rude and unhelpful for no apparent reason.I put that down to it probably being his 'time of the month'.

Vacforms are not too bad.all you need is lots of patience and plenty of filler.I jumped in at the deep end and made a 1/48 Halifax as my first vacform.Took me 4 months working most evenings to build it.Had a lot of problems with the fit of parts.Especially the engines and their associated fairings.I had to be very careful with the clear parts as the material they were made from meant they could only be glued with CA.Managed to do it without fogging them.Someone started a build of a vacform Whitley back in january on this site.Be interesting to see that when its finished as i fancy doing one myself.

Hi Trey, The search system on Hannants web shop is to put it bluntly 50 questions for the professor. The seams at first way to many boxes to check and drop downs to choose from. However once you have tried it a few times, it works very well.

Regarding vac form: You will be fine. Cut over size with a blade then trim down bit by bit until you get to where you need to be. Test fit all the time. Be very careful of canopies. one slip and you are stuffed. Also be careful how you hold the parts when cutting.

Other than that no problems.

Look forwards to seeing this in the build section.

Dave,Ian thanks for the input ,I'm going to need all the help I can get when this build launches

At the risk of 'teaching you to suck eggs' i would advise you attach the vacform fuselage parts to the kit parts by using strips of plastic card across the join on the inside of the fuselage.what us aircraft engineers call a butt strap. This will make the join a lot stronger than just butting up the parts together. Helps make aligning the parts easier as well.
