Aren't holidays just great for getting to finish off that model that's been on the bench a bit too long ! I can't remember when I started this Corsair (October I think) but with the aid of a Christmas, it's done.

It's my first Tamiya, a bit expensive, but it's a great kit to build OOB, which is all I normally do.

But, can anyone recommend other manufacturers with this sort of detail ?



The fit of this kit is very good. There were just no problems with it at all. I have cheated a bit, I just didn't fancy that really dark blue colour scheme, so I've lightened it a bit. There is a bit of post shading, but even with the wife's posh camera, I just can't get any decent photo's of this model so some detail is missing from ther pic's.



Well my daughters bought me the Airfix Vulcan for Christmas, talk about chalk and cheese (Airfix / Tamiya) I'm going to need filler on the Vulcan, lots of filler !!

After the P51 I really like the shape of the corsair and would like it to be the next plane I build. I would not Recommend a Nichimo kit to anyone :emo10: (If they still exist) I think it must be quite an old kit as the instructions and box etc are very faded.

Looks gorgeous doesn't it... Hey ho... such a long way for me to go to get anything anywhere near this good. Still, can't stop trying. Thanks for the great inspiration to move up another notch Colin, that is one great model.

Fenlander, I'm pleased with the way this Corsair turned out, but I can't help thinking that the fact this is a Tamiya model had a lot to do with it. The detail is there to be 'highlighted' which is all I have done. Tamiya is expensive (this is my first) but I think you would be impressed when you open the box - I was ! Dograt mentions the P51 (thanks for you comments) - Tamiya do one of those. maybe I'll get one in for a rainy day

I hope you won't mind me posting my pictures on your thread Colin, but I think they are a good example for aircraft newbies (me really!) what a difference attention to detail and weathering can make to a model..

I built this 1/72 Corsair so far back in time that I probably couldn't spell weathering let alone know what it meant regards modelling techniques.

Your's looks alive and used, whereas mine is just, well a passable model. The two sets of pictures show what a difference a bit more time and attention can make to the finished model.

great looking corsair ,colin, well done. I really love the shape of this plane ,the old revell 1/32 was one of my first planes i did after taking up the hobby again ,so ill always have a soft spot for it. Good luck with the vulcan (and from what ive read you might need it!!) cheers tony

Are yo sure that is a 1/72 Ron? Looks good to me. Have to agree that the weathering and attention to detail on Colin's Corsair has brought it to life and although most people would agree that Tamiya make some impressive kits, I know if I built the same one it would not look as good as that.

Colin, I like your weathering very much, just enough to make it look like a hard working bird. Cockpit detail is very good too. I made the Airfix Vulcan about a year ago, I know the problems you are having very well. Keep up the good work. Derek

Thanks everyone for your comments. Spanner570, no problem with you adding a few pics here, infact they might sort of prove my point about the Tamiya detail. Look at the landing gear of the two models, Tamiya went to town with theirs. But Ron, you still have a nicely aged Corsair there, I like it.

Yakface, thanks for your comments, I have to agree, the shape of this plane is very nice, but a 1:32 is too much for me - space is a real problem so it's 1:72 for me, well at least until the kids move out ! (although I do have a 1:48 revell mosquito in waiting) Derek and Scot, thanks for your input, a lot of the detail was highlighted using pastels, a tip I picked up here. This is something new to me, but a really useful tool in the modeler's toolbox.

Sorry Colin, I feel such a fool as I did not read your intro right... I thought that your Corsair was a 1/32!!!!!!!! That is truly amazing for 1/72. Now I re look at the pics I see that they are paint pot tops the cockpit and engine are stood on.... good grief.... I am amazed.

I appreciate that the Airfix, rather elderly Vulcan, will not match a Tamiya kit for detail but what exactly are the issues with the Vulcan?

Yes, 'side by side' the detail is quite noticable. I have been scratching my head trying to figure out what make of kit my 1/72 Corsair is. I made it so many years ago! I would guess it's either Airfix or Revell, because I do remember they were the only major players at that time. What an admission, but seeing your cracking job has set me to thinking, it's my birthday in March so if I tell the present Mrs. Ron about it now and seeing they do a 1/32, she could start keeping money back from her recently aquired pension.....Sorted!

PS Regarding the weathering on my F4, I have to confess I never 'mucked about' with the model and finished it factory fresh. In all these years it has been gathering dust undisturbed. The weathering is 100% natural, I just dusted it down and took the pickies !

So if you wait for 25/30yrs your next model will have the same weathered look and all for nowt!...Sorry I'm starting to babble on.

Hi Colin M I have recently built a Tamiya 1:32 Spitfire and it was a great build except for the price, but I have to say it was worth it. Your Corsair looks great, you did a great job on detailing and weathering the old bird. Tamiya kits hardly ever need the use of filler. Hasegawa is another good model producer, but I find they are more expencive in my neck of the woods. I usually buy Revell, and airfix kits and sometimes trumpeter. The odd time I splurge. I have been modeling over 17 years and I am still not as good as some on this forum or anywhere else, but I am working on it. It looks as though you are getting very good from what I see. Don't be afraid of wrecking a model or two, I use the cheaper kits to try something new and practice it on the cheap kit. I have finished the Spitfire I am just letting the paint cure and then I am going to do some light weathering. I am also almost done the Airfix 1:48 Spitfire Mk.IIa, Christmas is a perfect time to get some old kits out of the way.

I'm so jealous of you people who get to model in 1:32, even 1:48 would be a leap forward for me, but lack of space means I tend to just do 1:72.

Spanner570, if you could bottle your 'weathering system' you would be a millionaire this time next year........

Fenlander, I might start work on the Vulcan tonight, I'll try to remember to take some pics as I go, but it will be a slow job, I'm not capable of knocking out models quickly. But the biggest problem with the vulcan is the fuselage halves don't match very well at all, and then there's the intakes, these are so bad, you can buy resin replacements !

Curt, a 1:32 tamiya spitfire, the detail must be amazing, I was very impressed with the 1:72 Corsair, so would probably faint at the sight of a 1:32. Have you posted any pics yet ? I really would like to see this.
