This is odd. One picture is all that's necessary to show you the completed bas relief image.

I'm reasonably pleased with it. Certainly enjoyed the process, and it has increased my confidence in trying more complex freehand designs in future. And I'd certainly give flat figures another go - it's a very interesting process, and really pushes you to consider how to cheat the eye.

Ah, go on then. One more picture for a sense of scale.

Well I think that's brilliant. Flats are something we rarely see. I hope to see you do more.

Just been looking at it on my big computer screen. Beautifully painted. Are the shadows under the horses etc painted onto the background or are they just due to the lighting?

Thanks everyone - you're very kind.

No, that's just the lighting. The back of the piece is not totally flat, so it sits just fractionally proud of the backing around the margins.

That’s excellent Paul. Love the horseflesh especially. Top job :thumb2: . Just out of interest, what regiment was the purple hussar from? I’m guessing he’s Prussian, but he seems a bit flamboyant for them….

BTW in your "build" log you mentioned frogging. Excuse my ignorance but exactly what is that?
It's the braided decorative fastenings across the chest of the chap in purple.

I also referred to the freehand on his valise. It's not a valise, it's a sabretache, I believe. The valise is the cylindrical bag behind him.

I have not a clue, Tim! No research, no expert knowledge at all I'm afraid.

The sculptor, Roy Hunt, said he was "Capt. Egloff, I think".

P.S. I've just done a bit of research! He was in the 1st Life Hussars, Prussian Army.

That link is refusing to load for me, Tim, but I've found one or two other references.

I think I might start a new trend - make your model first and then do the research to discover all the mistakes you've made!

Mate, Hussars were so flamboyant in that period that nobody but you will really notice…..Napoleonic wars uniforms in general are far more colourful and complex than any fantasy figure you can think of….I think every French regiment of Hussars had a different coloured coat, Dolman, and trousers than the next, for example…..it is a world well worth exploring ;)

Ha ha! I have a number of older brothers who are very keen that I paint some more Napoleonics, but I'm not that motivated, tbh - this caught my eye because it was such a superb, large flat. I already have some more fantasy stuff in the pipeline.

That's lovely work. The horses look immaculate, which are a very tricky subject to paint indeed. Full marks Paul.

Gavin.

Paul, fantastic work, i really enjoy seeing Flats being painted. So rarely see them around ( although i suppose there are dedicated sites with suppliers information ). Horses look superb especially like the Grey ( personal choice, Chestnut is also brilliant ). Those Napoleonic Hussars certainly went in for flamboyant uniforms and you Sir have created an excellent representation in your Artwork. top work :thumb2:.
