discussion Africa BF110 colours?

Hi all.

Planing to do a 1/72 new Airfix BF 110 in Africa core sceeme.

Were they just brown over light blue (RLM unknown for now) or were they mottled like the 109 E's?

Since I broke my fine airbrush I need to choose subjects that are easier to paint LOL!

Hi Theuns.When i was researching ME110 colours some time ago i found some profiles of aircraft used in North Africa.They were painted RLM78 'Himmelblau' on the undersides with RLM79 'Sandbraun' on uppersurfaces only.Being Luftwaffe there were probably several different schemes used.Hopefully someone who knows more about the subject will be able to give you a better answer.

Hi Theuns,the lads are quite right,79 over 78 with a very low demarcation line was standard. Of course being the Luftwaffe all sorts of mottles and squiggles (usually in RLM 80) were applied to some aircraft.

OK thanx guys. I will have a closer look at the Kit's colours and hope that it is a uniform brown as my current airbrush can't do squigles!

I will try to find a pic of the kit box art and show you.

To my untrained Mk 1 Eyeball this looks plain brown???

If so I will build this kit soon.

Would the demarcation line between the blue and the brown be the same as a "standard" 20-30mm wide spray line, or is it a more "gradual" fade in?

In 1/72 it would almost be a hard line.

Very much depends when and where the camouflage was applied. It was not masked so there was always a certain amount of 'fade in'. In 1/72 this is indeed effectively a hard line but it's an artistic decision on a model.
