Well it's another nice little 1:72 new tool from Airfix.

I remember building the original one, just a while back now, it was like a little hedgehog with its very proud rivets. Not this one, all smooth with recessed panel lines.
This was going to be the Costal command version, until, again some paint lifted whilst removing the masking tape. So, I played my joker and changed to the all black night fighter version, which was based at Childs Ercall in Shropshire, a place my work has taken me to a couple of times. Which also meant, no more masking.
A simple black scheme could be a bit mono-tone, so I've made the old dear a bit tired and worn out.

The kit went together quite well. There does seem to be a problem where the front fuselage joins the rear, it can leave a bit of a gap, with a knock on effect of meaning the multi piece canopy doesn't fit. Some just accept the gap and fill. But actually, for me, it was just a case of trial fit, sand a bit, trial fit again and eventually the gap had closed up.
Alright, I did cheat just a bit, I bought a masking set, well I mean, look at all that canopy...…..

Very good job, Colin.
An all black aeroplane really needs to be weathered like that and you've got it wonderfully matt as well. What lacquer do you use?

This is my first use of this:

I've used a number of different matt coats, but was never really happy, most had a very slight sheen, which sometimes was ok. But, sometimes, you just want a really flat finish. And that's what this does. I've just used it over acrylic matt black with no problems.

I switched to Alclad Matt cote a few years back. Not had a problem since. Gives perfect results every time. Great build by the way. I’m waiting for Airfix to release it in 1/48

Alclad Matt cote

Matt and flat seem to be different products. I'm using AL 314 and matt is AL 313. But what on earth is the difference between matt and flat in the real world ? Right, I've just had a look at Alclad's website and it appears 'Flat' is the absolute least 'shiny' clear coat in their range. There's not much in it, but you can see the difference.
