Moving along now , after giving the canopy a coat of interior green i primed the top of the model with grey primer , then did the underside with white primer. My reasoning here was that the hurricanes were originally painted in the faa extra dark sea grey / dark slate grey / sky ,then overpainted with the white , just the top of the nose being left in the original colours , so the grey of the primer will hopefully give a bit of variation if im careful with the white. The EDSG / dark slate grey area on the nose has been sprayed and when fully cured will be masked off ready for the white . Before this I’m going to spray the sky undersides though .View attachment 442539View attachment 442540View attachment 442541View attachment 442542View attachment 442543View attachment 442544View attachment 442545View attachment 442546View attachment 442547

Looking fantastic Tony. I did the Revell version of this years ago, the canopy had no framing and I had to use decal strips, which was interesting. Love these Airfix 1/72 kits. The pilot looks the same as he was in the 1970s :nerd:

After reading a few reviews of this kit regarding the size of the propeller I had a good look at it and after dry fitting it have to agree it looks a little small . The reviews say its about 3mm undersize and with weedy blades so off to the spares box again!
I only had 1 prop in 1/72 but luckily it was about the right size, just needing the blades reshaping a bit and the hub sanding down to fit in the kit spinner. The kit prop is on the right , I’d already painted it !

Coming on nicely Tony. Good fix on the prop. 3mm at 1/72 is a long way out....

Well done.

Well after the growth spurt of progress due to the xmas holidays its now slowed down to a crawl again! Nevertheless i got something done yesterday . It got painted white a few days ago and now its had the recognition stripes painted on , and the sky undersides done .The masking has been taken off the nose and underneath and its had a coat of Klear ready for the decals . Hi Tony
Canopy masking looks neat and very fiddly. I like your thinking with the primer. Should really help with the colour coat. Shame Airfix got the prop size so wrong but sorted now.

Decals on- no issues as usual with airfix decals . Most of the ancillaries have also been fitted - wheels , tail hook , exhausts. The kit aerial looked too small and didnt have the little nib where the wire attaches so i stretched some flat section sprue and made a new one . The tiny pole on the top of the rudder was made from a piece of brass tubing , the fishing line wire being glued inside this before pulling taut and gluing to the mast . All thats left now is weathering ( carefully ,as the panel lines are visible enough already ) exhaust staining and de masking. View attachment 444638View attachment 444639

That is one odd paint scheme. Did they try to save on anti-glare paint by retaining the original camouflage finish on the upper nose?

Thread owner
I think the original scheme was left on the nose for that reason jakko , anti dazzle , the white and sky being to blend in with the clouds over the atlantic when seen from a u boat

Calling this done , its had its final matt coat , weathering and unmasked. The weathering on a white aircraft ( black too) is always tricky as its easy to overdo it . I restricted it to a grey wash on the control surfaces and a few of the panels that would be removed regularly ,ie. Engine, guns, plus a little light chipping and some exhaust and gun staining. Heres a few pics I’ll put the rest on a completed thread , cheers tonyView attachment 444726View attachment 444727View attachment 444728
