I thought this might be of interest to some.I'm about to paint my Lightning with Alclad.The fin and fuselage spine need to be painted white first for ease of masking.I was worried that Alclad black primer would react with the Vallejo White primer I intend using for the white areas.So I sprayed two coats of the white on a test piece and left it over night to dry.Then this morning I sprayed a heavy coat of Alclad Black primer over the white.I deliberately sprayed too heavy a coat in order to get plenty of the solvent on the white primer.As you can see in the photo below,there has been no adverse reaction between the two paints.I also used my old Badger Anthem airbrush as I was worried the cellulose thinners I used to clean the air brush would damage my Iwata.

That's a useful exercise, thanks Dave. Incidentally I've been blowing lacquer/cellulose thinner through my Iwatas for many years (I use Mr Color lacquers or Tamiya paints thinned with lacquer thinner) with no adverse effects.

I have to ask, is that the black primer or the base coat gloss. it looks very shiny for a primer. unless its still vegry wet...

It's gloss black base Ian.I thought this was the primer.Or is there an Alclad primer as well?

I believe the gloss black is the recommended primer for Alclad Chrome, but they also do a white and a grey primer for use with their other shades.

There is Dave. They do White, grey and black primers and the Gloss black base.

The gloss base works well just needs a very good shake and spray on with loads of fine coats. It dries pretty much instantly.

Your alclad gloss black looks normal over the vallejo or any white primer , after 2 or 3 coats it will be fine , I normally use halfords grey primer for the alcald gloss black base coat and that still takes a few coats , as for the cellulose thinner/cleaner its fine I`ve been using solvent zero and alclad paints for years and my iwata`s still work like new ,

Remember alclad is like water and the pigments are tiny unlike the normal paints we use ,dries quickly but 2-3 mist coats will give great results

my only word of caution with cellulose is if your ab is the Neo iwata range , I believe they have rubber o rings if so after a short time the cellulose will eat/melt the o rings.

Thanks for the advice.My Iwata is the 'Revolution' model so should be ok.Ive decided to spray the whole model with he Vallejo White primer.Then I can mask the fin and spin end do the rest of the model in the Alclad black.

Rubber seals will deteriorate with cellulose thinner in time, however if they are Teflon seals you will be OK.

Teflon is impervious to cellulose thinner!

I would prime the whole thing in black then spray the white spine and fin. Mask those off then do the black base. Sounds weird?

Vallejo model color's white covers quite well and a couple of light coats should cover the black primer. The gloss base will work well over the black primer.

However I do have an odd way of doing things at times. This sounds crazy but it works.

Should you not trust the idea, as you have to mask the tail and spine anyway, why not prime and paint that. Then mask it off and do the black for the rest....

Interesting stuff, I've never used Alclad but plan to sometime in the future, this is all very educational.
