Well at least I hope so, I've spent all week going through 12 years of pictures and optimising them, which was worth while as the image directory was 55GB down to 16GB, hopefully the forum should automatically resize the images that are uploaded, that's the problem with today's cameras and phones the take pictures in such a high res that the files are massive, the biggest one I found was 5MB, that's too big for a forum. 


The final thing was move to a new server, I did that last night, all seems to have gone well, the forum is running fast and hopefully no more database errors, and it saves a few quid every month as this server is cheaper but better spec. 


Any problems let me know and I will sort them as soon as I can.

John: I notice that two of the images in my recent post (on Monday I think) of my Timber Trailer (Completed civilian cars) have become very pixellated and almost unviewable. They are the 4th and 6th images.They were shown OK when I put them up. Perhaps they were victims of the optimising routine. Could they be repaired please?


Also, the other images in that post now show very noticeable compression artifacts. Perhaps both of these faults (including the ones in the above para) arose because my images, as posted, had already been optimised by me as mentioned on the next para, to reduce unnecessarily large file sizes, and the forum's optimising routine optimised them further which reduced the quality.


I always use Photohop to reduce the number of pixels to 72 pixels per inch (which is the standard for computer screens) but keep the image at the chosen size). When posting my Timber Trailer recently, the second picture was several GB in size straight off the camera (a compact) but only 98KB when posted.


Photoshop Elements is much cheaper and can do the same thing, and there are other free programs as well.

Thanks John, great work. So, does this mean I don't have to spend ages cropping and re-sizing my images before up loading ? My question sounds obvious, but confirmation would be nice.

That's the theory, this image was 6000x4000 300DPI and was 12.4MB, it's been resized to 640x480 and is only 37kb, it's a big difference.


@Stevekir I have to original images on my PC at work, I will see if I can find them, but you can re-upload them, the resizing wouldn't have affected the image quality as I only changed the size and not the colour depth, however I did run something before that did strip too much out of the image, I thought I had re-uploaded the originals.

Thanks for the great effort, I'm posting my resized images @ 800x600dpi - The windows paint tool/app does it quickly.

You don't need to resize, the software will do it for you.

Thanks John,  it is nice that the software will autoresize.  Every time I do it I argue with myself about how small to go.
