Andrew's 1/48 Academy Spitfire XIVc

Nowt wrong with those stripes....as steve said....applied by brush and not always neat....in fact ive got a pic somewhere that it looks like they blindfolded the poor erk before they put a brush in his hand!

This is going together nicely InvasionStripes_10.jpg

Andrew,
I was going to say I will follow along, but your nearly finished. Nice job on the stripes.

Dont worry about the stripes not being straight. I believe they were hand painted on in the war and were often wonky. Looks more realistic

Thanks chaps good to have you on board and you're right about the stripes. The application of stripes in the pre D-Day rush was haphazard at best - understandably given that they only had a few days at most to apply them. I have though read in a few places, that in time, they came to be applied by the maintenance units and so their application was somewhat neater.

In this case there are so many things wrong with this kit both in terms of shape and markings, that I though I might as well experiment with using the stripe masks too, as I'd never used them before....the proverbial 'in for a penny and in for a pound'.

Scottie - Not sure what's going on to be honest with this build....I'm on to finish this record time for me....I think having a week off at the end of August got me well ahead of the game!

Thanks again chaps!

OK chaps......so another couple of mammoth masking sessions this week.....and what do I have to show for it??

Two narrow yellow lines and four red squares! That's it!!

Seriously thought I think this is only the second time I have done the yellow stripes this way and it's the first time I have done the squares this way - so much better than trying to do the decals on those wing edges!!!

The curve of the wing - especially on the top make the yellow band appear to narrow it heads inwards but they are the same width.....it's just an optical illusion created by the curve of the wing.

Next up varnish and assembling the undercarriage.

ACW as usual!

Andrew

PS...I'm just following the instructions on this, given it's a 'test' build of sorts on a dodgy kit....so apologies for any errors!!

All the best!!

Looking great Andrew. I was going to ask about the missing invasion stripes on the fuzz but I have just gone through your thread and seen your explanation on page 1. Lovely work.

OK chaps.....a short update.

Last night and this morning I have achieved the following:
  • Exhausts fitted
  • Pre-decal gloss coat on
  • Undercarriage assembled
So hopefully not long to the finish line now!

Oh and remember earlier on, how I commented on how the Griffon Spitfire nose bore more than a passing similarity to the noses of Supermarine's Schneider Trophy winning planes? Then it seems that it was more than a passing coincidence. Although quite how much the Schneider 'R' engine was a direct ancestor or more of an inspiration for the Griffon gets quite technical. ACW as usual.

Andrew,
that has turned out very nicely mate.

Thanks chaps. Glad you're liking it!

Steve - I did found two sets of AM decals I could have used to address the marking issue but the Hannants one is out of stock and they won't have it back in stock until the end of the year earliest, which is to long....the other set was over £30 and so was far too expensive!

Scottie - does this mean I can tempt you to do a wingy thing?!?!? 😉😆

Thanks again.
