Scale Model Shop

Andrew's resurrected 1/72 Armourfast Farmhouse....

Agree ref. Mel Andrew. He has gone very quiet since the book, but he has had a lot of personal issues, not least popping a lung during his covid infection. I think he is now focussed on commission builds, as is Luke’s Aps…

Thanks Rick. Much appreciated.

To be honest though I have begged, borrowed and stolen a lot of the ideas I use - and then adapted them. Although once in a while it turns out that I come up with an idea on my own which is then demonstrated by someone online.

In terms of inspiration the big one for me has been a guy called Mel Bose aka The Terrain Tutor. His work is aimed at the wargamer and runs from very simple techniques to quite complex ones that should come down to your scale. Unfortunately, his YouTube channel has gone very quite, although that's in large part to him focussing on his book., which is very, very good indeed. Link to YouTube below.

His book is called Terrain Essentials. You can get it in the US in hardback or PDF only. Look here for more info - you have to scroll down a bit: https://www.davetaylorminiatures.com/publishing/

I also stumbled across another wargaming terrain blogger - not on YouTube and much smaller but still very useful, although again he's gone a bit quite. He's called Greg and is in South Africa (link below).

There's another Brit I've found called Luke of Geek Gaming (it was APS previously). Quality wise he's probably a step up from Mel for some things but none of it is out of reach - that said from a distance some of it looks as good as a lot of dioramas I've seen. He has his own shop, so he does plug his stuff occasionally but not to an annoying level. (link below).

Hope that helps and thanks for joining me on the journey.

Indeed a lot on for one person.

In case you hadn't heard his marriage also came to an end, plus some mental health issues, plus money worries.

In one of the Sunday Nighters before Christmas he basically asked people for money to tide him over, in part because his Patreon revenue had dropped off significantly - presumably because people stopped supporting because he wasn't posting new content. Such a shame for such a genuine bloke.

Hope you find them useful. If you want to take things to a whole new level, look up Night Shift and some of his recent builds.

Good morning all

So the base has seen some paint, as have the floors.

The base was done with a mixture of cheap children's paints, some DIY paint tester pots and Humbrol's and Revell's Dark Earth (not that the Revell one is in the least bit dark). I'm not sure if the paths will need a coat of slightly lighter colour paint, I'll wait until I have the flock down.

The floors were done with a couple of heavy washes of Humbrol's enamel Natural Wood 110 to give a used effect. I was probably a little heavy in hindsight and should have done lighter coats as I've done previously when using the technique.

ACW as usual.

Andrew

FYI - the base is a tad darker/browner in real life but you get the idea.

It's really nice to see that junior spends time with you modelling. Something Andrew he will remember all his life .:thumb2::thumb2::thumb2:.

Thanks John. He seems to enjoy it most of the time.....it's my painting dragging on that bothers him!!! ;) :smiling5:

When it comes to the Soviet Tank GB though it's my intention he does it all!

ATB.

Hi Andrew
Base looks to be progressing well. I agree with John it is great that Junior likes sharing modelling with you.
Jim

The base is looking fantastic Andrew!!! Kudos to you both you and Junior. I see some of the ads on the newspaper under it offer things that would REALLY set it off. The fruit trees are a little pricey though........and maybe a tad out of scale too. I would check into the patio mounts though..........

Good morning all

So I've finished the roof for the time being. I'll have one final look once the main house structure has been weathered but I don't think it will need much more work:
  • The vertical separation between the columns of the tiles had been lost a bit. I didn't want to created a full on and potentially false looking 'black shadow' but something a bit softer. I did this with a couple of thin coats of a thin pin wash made from equal measures of Vallejo Game Wash Umber 73.203 and Sepia 73.200, plus a few drops of thinner and flow aid.
  • To calm the tiles down a bit and given them an older look, I created a very thin wash from Life Colors Rust and Dust set, specifically UA705 Dust Type 1 as it has a slightly reddish tint. Again the roof had a couple of coats.
ACW as usual.

Andrew

-------------------------------

Re-defining the vertical separation.

The before

The after - a subtle separation, which is what I was after.

The 'worn tile' wash

Life Colour UA705 in the centre.

Two coats of the left of the brush - one coat to the right.

The right hand side two coats, left hand side none.

The finished effect.....the overhead shot looks a bit heavier than in reality due to the angle

Now that is a nice bit of roof tiling detail Andrew, the base is coming along also...going to be cracker of a setting when done.

Hi Andrew
The roof was definitely worth the time and effort. The difference is subtle but looks much more realistic.
