Battery explosion.

Thank you fellas, the battery in question was a NiMhd, the charger should have turned off, discharged and then trickle charged as needed. It beeped to inform me it had finished the main charge. I was literally a foot and a half away when it blew, as said it was a very lucky day.
YES YOU WAS SI very lucky indeed now go do the lottery eh but seriouly ive heard of other guys havin a batt explode as a neibours was chargin his car batery an he went an lent over the top of the batt as he took the plugs out of the batt to see if the water was bubbelin an he had a ciggerete gion in his mouth an the batt exsploded in his face but again he was very lucky to get away with some cuts like you an the shock of the bang made him think never again but to him havin a ciggy goin was stupid an crazy but he wont do that again in a hurry

Blimey what a frightening experience :surprised:

Glad you weren’t badly hurt Si but understand how shook up it left you.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Geoff.

Very nasty Si. Glad you are OK and hope it has no lasting effects on you.

Not something you probably want to hear right now, but I think you should report that faulty charger to trading standards. It’s obviously not up to the job and should be investigated and possibly removed from the marketplace.

Damn Si, I just saw this and was shocked a bit. The main thing is you are Ok, cause there's only one you and the heck with the other stuff. You're much more important Sir!!! Take care of yourself...

Prost

Sorry to hear that Si. A lucky escape.... I'm in Dave's camp and never given it a thought, although I do try to use reputable batteries and charger.

Impact I'm actually charging four NiMH ones right now.

Hope you recover from the effects quickly!

True Tim, but also the battery should have a safe means of releasing excess pressure.

Hi Chris, NiMh batteries are rechargeable type, normally in AA size. These are then grouped together to produce a multi cell unit with a universal charging and usage connector eg-Tamiya etc.

I know what you mean Si, I bought a pack of 4 AA NiMH batteries last year for use in my TX, brought them home, put on charge in my Gyrfalcon AL-88 charger, and one of the batteries went into thermal runaway, fortunately I was there when it happened and I could switch off at the wall and prevent an explosion.
Of course I returned the pack to the store, and was refunded.
I now only use standard non-rechargeable AA batteries, I don't trust the rechargeable ones any more.
