-absolutely nothing–half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.

My "office" today.
HMS Caroline, sole surviving ship from the battle of Jutland.

Very nice…..quite a lot of her seems to be missing though :tongue-out3:

Upon Caroline's decommissioning in 2011, her future was uncertain. Proposals were made to return the ship to her First World War appearance, which among other things would have involved sourcing and installing 6-inch (152.4 mm) and 4-inch (102 mm) guns of that era and removing the large deckhouse from her midships deck.

I can't tell from the photos what exactly is missing , but total armament should be

You lucky devil Karl. A lot to see. Am I right in thinking that it's reopening on the 1st April?

There's a big drill hall been built on her from when the sea cadets had her. A shame it's there but it gives a good space for functions on a place of interest and there's been a few weddings. I think the plan to remove this has been abandoned.
All the guns are replicas, the torpedo launchers are not there at all.
The wheel house was closed in, then became a store and has been reopened again to try to restore the appearance during ww1. Which means I am allowed to drill into a wall there.......
She has big arms holding her to the dock, which is flooded so she is afloat.
The timber decking is actually a rare wood that was being illegally imported and was seized and subsequently donated.
One of the curators has told me the only death on board was the butcher falling overboard, so no ghosts.......

Still, watchout for a wet guy with a meat cleaver. :smiling5:

She's primarily a museum now so spaces are set aside for educational displays, but a lot of the officers quarters, captains quarter, ward room, marines mess etc are as they would of been.
(All the bits oob to cadets .....)

Oh, the mast and rigging have been removed fairly recently too.
I was told the reasoning but probably some structual fatigue.

Karl can you remember what that wood was please ?

Thanks

And after a quick search, Iroko.
Thanks .
Used it many times Karl, must have come from an illegal source as it's still readily available. Not the best thing to machine, the dust even when using a mask would make people feel sick and cause head aches. Perfect for that use though, I used it for boarded gates. Never moved or effected by the weather .
