Hi all what's the best paint for chrome/metal effects just got the 1/12 Bentley and don't want to use the plated parts in the kit unless I have to. When I put parts together they seem to be different colours and show badly, I normally use the kit plated parts and have never found a chrome paint that doesn't look like silver, I have some plasticote type paint which looks good till you touch it, it's not an actual chrome effect I want really its aluminium (not silver) that I really want.

The only metal looking colours I can think of is Humbrol 11, Maybe this is what you're looking for, it comes with most Airfix sets that include paint. Happy Christmas and I hope you sort something out

Thanks for the reply but no that is not an aluminium effect it is just silver paint, I have want the plated effect you get with the kit.

If you ask me the only one that covers everything from dull aluminium to high shine chrome is the Alclad range. Many think that they are to much effort, but I like them. Its a new medium and you will need to get used to it at the start. Many make the mistake of spraying it on as if it was paint. it needs to be done with just enough to go the job. After a few tries its quite easy.

I have yet to get Alclad chrome to work for me. I have used Uschi van der Rosten metal polishing powder, chrome-type, item 4008 and found it surprisingly realistic, and very easy to apply (you just put a very small amount on to a cotton bud and rub it on). It needs a gloss black undercoat as all shiny finishes seem to need. Let that undercoat harden well or there might be a few small scratches from rubbing on the powder. The chrome appearance probably would wear off in time if the part were handled a lot. John's shop stocks it. Here is my report in October (scroll down to a posting date of Oct. 31 2014):

alclad is the best. you need to put gloss black paint underneath for good shining effect. after applying it do not touch to surface. to protect it i suggest to use testors or model master metalizer sealer. it helps to protect surface

alclads own clears are very good as a sealer , matt , sheen , gloss .

Thanks for all the help guys, I have ordered the powders and will get some alclad will try them both, although is sounds as though alclad is the same as plasticote if you can't touch it when done, that won't be much good on the rad and if alclad is the same as plasticote laquering it will turn it to a silver colour and no longer look like chrome, guess we'll see.

I've always said Alclad are the way to go, but having used the Mr Hobby buffable metallics I now have to say I swapped to those. You can brush paint them or spray them and then buff them up if required. I'll still use the Alclad from time to time but see Mr Hobby been my main choice now.

I think metallic finishes are even more subject to personal preferences than regular finishes

Like several above I'm an Alclad user, which incidentally you certainly can handle and mask if needs be. Others find some of the other finishes preferable and I think it's probably worth trying a couple to see how you get on.
