Bf 109 G-2 (Trumpeter 1/24)

Thanks guys!

So ... it's almost a year ago since my last update, time flies!
The 109 got shelved because the build progressed rather slowly.
I convinced myself to finish it before starting any new projects :smiling6:, so here's an update from last month.

First I'd like to point out that all the hinged parts 'dangle' very loose - which I personally don't like for a static model so I will glue them in a fixed position later on.
Steven_Bf109_24_033.jpg

The hinge-system is made with PE-hinges which slide over a steel rod.

Left aileron and flap.
Steven_Bf109_24_036.jpg

Gluing the bottom- and upper-wing parts, aileron and flaps in position.
Steven_Bf109_24_037.jpg

Gluing the elevator(hinges) to the horizontal stabilizer.
Steven_Bf109_24_038.jpg

Wing ready and cleaned up
Steven_Bf109_24_039.jpg

Gluing the wing to the fuselage.
Steven_Bf109_24_040.jpg

I bit of putty was added in the front and back of the wing connection, this still needs to be sand down when cured.
The holes for the MG151/20 cannons under the wing were also filled with putty because I want this model to look like a standard fighter.
Steven_Bf109_24_041.jpg

Next I'd like to keep the engine out of the aircraft so I can use it in another project.
This means I'll have to find another way to attach the exhaust pipes to the model.
Steven_Bf109_24_042.jpg

So I found this piece in my scrap-box and marked 12 holes with a scriber-tool.
I used a small Dremel-bit to cut out the holes.
Steven_Bf109_24_043.jpg

Then the exhaust-pieces were glued to the panel, so now they shouldn't be too difficult to install in the nose.
Steven_Bf109_24_044.jpg

I added the horizontal stabilizer and started cleaning seams, this is what I have so far...

That's all for now,
Keep it safe and have a nice day! :thumb2:

... 5 years later ...

Well, I was looking forward so much to the new '1/24 Airfix bf109G-6' tool and really want to get my hands on that one day,
but then a feeling of shame came over... I still have a G-2 shelf-queen in the closet!
So I decided to get this G-2 finished first before buying more boxes...

First thing on the list was masking the canopy, I used 18mm Tamiya tape for this.
Steven_Bf109_24_046.jpg

After all those years the pilot is still waiting in his seat to get air-born, this was an old resin figure from Evilbay.
Steven_Bf109_24_047.jpg

There was no room between the pilot and the canopy, so I couldn't glue the steel plate behind his head.
I glued the 3 canopy pieces in place with Kristal Klear, the fitting of those was very good.
Steven_Bf109_24_048.jpg

Next is the under carriage, which has a working spring, quite nice but not useful for my model,
Steven_Bf109_24_049.jpg

If you remember correctly I'm making this model in 'flying' pose, so I need the gear to be 'retracted', those parts are not designed to be retracted as you can see here,
Steven_Bf109_24_050.jpg

So in the end I just glued the wheels inside the bay with epoxy,
Steven_Bf109_24_051.jpg

Then covered them up with the bay-doors, I glued some plastic bits inside the 'hinge' hole and also a small disk between each wheel-axle and the bay-door.
Steven_Bf109_24_052.jpg

Originally I wanted to 'hang' the model on strings, but I will use a 3mm steel rod/pole instead.
For this I drilled a 3mm hole in the belly, angled
Steven_Bf109_24_053.jpg

And that will give a flying pose like this, still need to cut a 3mm steel rod (wooden stick at the moment)

I sprayed a dark grey for the inside of the cockpit (mix black/white Vallejo primer),
Steven_Bf109_24_055.jpg

Then I tried to cover all the cavities with black Vallejo primer,
Steven_Bf109_24_056.jpg

Then I covered the rest of the model with a light mist (still black Vallejo primer),
first time I'm not going full black on the primer coat, so hope this won't be an issue for the next stages.

That's all for now,
the puppy is going nuts so it's time to go to the park and relief some energy!
Thanks for reading, Cheers

Thanks Joe, got an update,

So the kit comes with 2 very similar color-schemes, both in Russia that didn't really spoke to me.

As I love spiral spinners I went through my book collection and eventually found a 109G-2 with a spiral spinner, which is not that common as the spirals were a late war thing and by then most of the G-2 were destroyed or replaced by later 109 variants. As it turns out the Luftwaffe aircraft in the Arctic (Norway, Finland) had a longer lifespan and also got the older variants assigned to them.

So this is the scheme I'm going for:

These are drawings of the same aircraft I found in my books,

I started with RLM76 (Vallejo) on the underside

Then added RLM75 (Vallejo) based on a traditional G-2 scheme without winter camo.

Then added RLM74 (Vallejo),

Need to add some more color to this side,

Next is the yellow, crosses and wintercamo...

Thanks for the comments guys 👍

Was able to get some more bench-time this evening, I masked out the yellow panels with Tamiya tape and plastic foil - always a joy...
Steven_Bf109_24_064.jpg

Next I added white primer (Vallejo) as a base coat for the yellow,
Steven_Bf109_24_065.jpg

After that I sprayed a light orange color (6 drops yellow, 1 orange) over the white, to get a 'warm' base for the final yellow coat.

Then I finished it with Luftwaffe yellow RLM04 (Vallejo) and removed all the masking.
This is the result so far - it's quite exciting to see the model finally making some progress!

Thanks Joe 🙏

This evening I did some work on the spiral spinner - I found some spiral mask shapes on Google images and printed them in a few different sizes.
Then I traced the drawing with a pencil onto a sheet of 'AK Masking Tape A4' (AK8211).
Steven_Bf109_24_067.jpg

Next I've carefully cut the spiral with a small hobby knife, the curves made it a bit of a challenge.
Steven_Bf109_24_068.jpg

The mask was then added to the spinner, the spinner was previously sprayed with white primer (Vallejo).
Steven_Bf109_24_069.jpg

A lot of images tend to show black spinners/props, but most likely this was more of a 'black-green' (RLM70).
I took a middle ground and mixed 'RLM70' with 'black' as I prefer the look of a dark color.
Steven_Bf109_24_070.jpg

This is the result after removing the mask, the spiral curve wasn't perfectly cut with the knife but I'm still very pleased with it.
Steven_Bf109_24_071.jpg

That's all for now, I'm running out of hobby time again...

Thanks guys,
Got a few hours yesterday so tried to make a masking set with the AK (A4) adhesive...

The decals from the kit are nice, but at this scale I prefer to airbrush to avoid silvering issues. Also the fuselage crosses seem to be like 2mm too wide.

I first drew out the crosses in NanoCad (free), the crosses had a certain size (1000mm, 950mm, 900mm), then they divided the lines simply in percentages (for example [25%-25%-25%-25%] and so on).
Steven_Bf109_24_072.jpg

I laminated the print and placed pieces of AK masking tape on top, cut them out with a small blade. In this large scale it's easier to cut but the large piece of tape is a bit awkward to work with, the fine crosses were too fragile and got distorted, so I'll have to make new ones from paper.
Steven_Bf109_24_073.jpg

For the fuselage a 900mm cross was used, about 37.5mm in 1/24. I sprayed the inside black (Vallejo)
Steven_Bf109_24_074.jpg

Next the black cross is covered with an inside mask,
Steven_Bf109_24_075.jpg

Then the outer sides are sprayed with white (Vallejo),
Steven_Bf109_24_076.jpg

I carefully removed the mask, as I'll have to reuse it for the other side,
Steven_Bf109_24_077.jpg

No paint got damaged by the masking, so I'm very pleased with the result so far. I need to make another set for the top- and underwing... The rudder also got some green paint based on the reference picture.
Steven_Bf109_24_078.jpg

That's all for now, thanks for watching, cheers

Thanks guys!

Last time I screwed up the upper-wing mask, so I reprinted the cross on paper and placed transparent adhesive tape on top.
Then I've cut it with a knife, also added 5 more holes - these are covered with Tamiya tape...
Steven_Bf109_24_079.jpg

Next the mask was put in place and hold down with the Tamiya tape. I did use tweezers to hold down the middle section during airbrushing though.
Steven_Bf109_24_080.jpg

I sprayed a thinned white (Vallejo) and the mask worked great, used the same mask for the other side as well.
Steven_Bf109_24_081.jpg

Slowly getting there...
Thanks for watching - cheers
