I am presuming that all that would have been gold leaf. How did it stand up to the corrosive salt
of course doh, they say there is no such thing as a stupid question.........until nowPaul gold is inert so won't be affected by salt water that's why gold bullion found in ship wrecks doesn't degrade also it was reapplied on a regular basis.
The gold wouldn't be affected but the underlying carved wood would expand and contract. Gilded furniture is normally glod leaf over gesso but that wouldn't withstand water for long.Brian,
