For people with a Mac, a bug in a file, called "Bash", used deep down in the Unix and Linux operating systems, has a vulnerbility (its not a virus, worm etc.) that could allow nasty people to introduce malware via the Internet and read your traffic. The vulnerability has existed for 20 years but has been discovered only a couple of weeks ago. It is called "Shellshock". Windows machines are not affected.

Apple posted a fix today for client machines (that is, those in homes and businesses rather than servers used by Internet Service Providers). It is available at:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1769

and a thread in Apple Discussions is at:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/26727538#26727538

Its worth doing and very easy. You need to be on Maveracks 10.9.5 to run the fix. If you are not, upgrade from earlier versions.

That's strange, mine has been running fine:)

hi Steve thank you for the info, I did see some think about it on the ABC, last sunday,

I have a Pc that has win 7, and i do think it can be used against theses as well, Bash or shell shock

so if you do hear or find any links for win 7 please let us know, and im glad that apple as jumped on it,

Thanks for the up one this one I had seen it in the news the other day haven't noticed any probs with my Mac so far. Mines too old(2006 G5 the classic white one with eyesight) to upgrade to Lion, Mountain Lion let alone Maverick so the patch is no good for me.

Well I think a Mac is still a safer bet despite the news regarding "shellshock" windows computers require daily patches to attempt to fend off viruses and malware etc. My wife runs windows Vista through bootcamp on her Mac(required because of the type of work she does) and has to pay for virus protection on a yearly basis. I think I will stick with my Mac.

Strange, I've never paid for virus protection, never had to do daily patches :) Never had any maleware, viruses, then again I've never had to blame any "issues" on other services like ID logins and blame the customers :) Apple are forever releasing updates and most of those get updates for the failed updates, I also like to be able to pick any type of software up and run it and not have to buy a conversion to run Excel, word etc :) Oh look my works iPhone has another 12 updates to do!

Adrian

Maybe you should pay for virus protection, threats are always running in the background on windows computers and tend to get emailed to others without you realising. I run Office for Mac 2011 and that's not a problem. As far as iphones I'm not sure what updates your talking about. Apps require updates from time to time but that doesn't affect the functionality of the phone.

Never passed on any virus, I use free protection, all your paying for is something like Nortons or Mccaffees to gunk up your system and God help you if you ever try to remove it. The updated software on iPhones has caused numerous faults on all releases not just the latest ones, kinda know as I sell them :)

Adrian

Your talking about the ios 8 updates for the iphone 6 and 6+ As with all new operating systems there's going to be fixes that are required but they are not viruses or malware. As I said you'll not realise when you have passed on a virus that's the nature of the game. The free virus protections on offer are often inferior and don't pick all the viruses so tend to be false economy.

ahh all that money you Apple people pay because " we never get viruses or bugs" been an eye opener the last 6 months I bet :P Adrian
Yes, it will have been a facer for Apple, especially following the failure of the recent iOS upgrade.

What is amazing is that a) Apple have (but only by implication) admitted the existence of Shellshock; and b) have reacted speedily to a fault by taking quick action. In fact, after 18 years as a Mac user, it is the very first time I have witnessed Apple having ever admitted anything. They are as tight as a Trappist monk. (Wikipedia describes the Trappists as "a religious order of cloistered contemplative monastics"!).

I will never ever understand paying double amount for a computer/phone which is outdated comparing to the stuff that is on the market longer.

I know that Apple was a milestone back in 90s, now is more like a patent troll who steals someone else's technologies and produces it like everyone else in China, telling it's amazing and better then everything else.. I couldn't stand using a phone with such limits like iOs has. And this myth about safety.. yeah, a lot of celebs trusted in this Goebbels like propaganda and we can see their nakies in the web :)

I'm a Windows and android user for years and had no problems with viruses whatsoever, but I know a lot of people who had and I had to fix their mistakes:) just one advice. Don't press next every time you install something, read what's on screen and you'll be fine.

Not quite sure about the limitations you mentioned they run far better than any android phone. Just glad that the ios doesn't have stupid names like jellybean. As far as Imacs are concerned they have a lot longer shelf life than a windows computer and as tests have proved an Imac can run windows considerably faster than any pc.

Famous last words :D .

The things I hate, with a passion , is greed, bad manners, insurance/banks and computer hackers. People who do this should have their fingers removed, sorry to sound harsh, but they just make life a misery when your computer crashes due to them. Why do it? 90% is just nonsense designed to cause aggro.

Mountain Lion, Cheetah, Snow Leopard, Mavericks, Yosemite,, yup there all wonderful names !!!! NOT

Now remind me,, what videos on iPhone can play all formats??????

Oh I'd like to transfer my music , wait I cant, but I paid for it,, no sorry you still cant !

Oh and the previous phone updates didn't work either not just 8, 7 was redone 3 times before it worked!!!

There is a shop in Denmark that has made (or has had made) a cross over that can transfer and convert Android to iOS and vise versa. So you can buy what ever you want and have the content moved from the old phone to the new one... smart.

Sorry Ade, gonna have to disagree with you my friend. All Apple haters say the same things! Music, Videos, Operating system, Cost! Don't care! I Just want the thing to work when I switch it on and do what it's supposed to do. My Windows laptop is 3 years old and drives me absolutely nuts. It wasn't one of the cheap, nearly obsolete £300 quid ones that they like to fob of on people as a great deal either and now it's practically an antique. On the other hand, my iphone 4 and 1st generation ipad are both over 4 years old and have never given me any grief at all. Of course they update from time to time, but without any input from me. I shall be getting a Mac book next time that's for sure. Might even put one of those Apple stickers in the back window of my car....

Sent from my iphone;)

As said earlier over priced out dated restrictive tat, sent from my 4th replacement iPhone, good job I don't pay the bill! Though my PC is 2 years old and can out perform any mac out there, at a fraction of the cost.

4th!!! Crikey what you doing with them?

Thing is, I really don't care what version of windows you or anybody else uses or what android thingy you've got on your 'better' phone. Good for you if you like it. Apple suits millions of people so we use it. The thing with haters is they're so shouty about how terrible Apple products are and how ridiculously uninformed the millions of people who purchase them are, it all starts to come across a bit undignified.

You missed out Panther and Tiger, I'd hate to meet a jellybean in the jungle. I'd like to see this amazing PC of yours that out performs an iMac which version of Windows does it run on 3.1 ,XP, 2000 Vista, 7, 8 or the new 10 with the start button re-introduced?
