Bulldozer Komatsu G40, 1:48. Tamiya

Lots of little details in the kit and although some quite small parts, everything fits really well together...
Initially I made up the seat like this (see pic below), but quickly realised the seat is the wrong way round, Doh!
Easily rectified, but a simple schoolboy error! Lol!
Seat now the correct way round, and lots of detail added to the main body/chassis.
Quite a detailed cab area, lots of levers and pedals!
And we are done, this literally only took about two hours to build! Even comes with a little driver.
I think I see lots of rust in this models future, a model for me to experiment with rust effects , etc, maybe even a little dio involving a big heap of soil?

I agree, it's a lovely little kit and also lends itself well to a beaten up paint job as you're suggesting.
It's a pity none of the pictures of my build here have survived the software shenanigans
but I've kept the model as it's one of my favourites.

I seem to remember that one, it was a cracking build. Stood out because it was a different subject.

Wow, that really is a filler kit, that is very neat for a few hours - I’d almost be tempted to think about one once I get started into the stash.
Will start the priming and painting tomoz.....

Nice one peter , i do like a bulldozer . Plenty of scope for a little dio and lots of mud/ rust .

Komatsu or Komatu?
Just noticed that the Tamiya box says "Komatsu", but the included decals say "Komatu"..... so which is it, anyone know?

So I started the rust painting, I have a Mig/Ammo book on how to do rust, but TBH its basically a catalogue/sales brochure for their paints, pigments and washes! Also, they take about 50 steps to get to the final rust effect.
I have tried to break their long winded procedure down into fewer, simpler steps, as this is my first attempt, so I'm just experimenting.
The thing that I noticed with rust (actually like most things) is that its not one colour, its lots of shades and layers, etc.
So I will be building up several layers as I go, but certainly not 50, maybe 10 or 15 at most.... we'll see.
Pics of where I am so far.....
First step was some white splattering using a small bit of sponge.
Next up was some flat black splattering, again using a small sponge.
Next up was a Hull Red splattering, again using a small sponge.
The above first three applications were mostly on the front half of the dozer, but here we have now covered most of the whole thing.
NB: the sponge, although small, cannot get into some of the hard to reach places, so I will be going back with a small brush to touch up areas that the sponges have missed, so this is just early stages.
I then used a larger, thicker brush, to blend in the colours used so far, and also did some dry brushing to drag the paint a bit.
Bit more dry brushing, starting to blend better now.
I think I may go over it and do the base three colours again, (white, black and hull red) and them maybe add another colour, eg: dark brown, and then it will be a coat of varnish to seal things, and then on to washes, I have a couple of rust washes and a rust pigment, so we can try to build up more layers.

I looked into the name discrepancy when I built mine. The company is Komatsu, but the real bulldozer is badged up Komatu, like the model.
It's a few years ago but I remember it was something to do with the translation from Japanese, where "tu" and "tsu" are pronounced the same.

Oops, just noticed in the photo above I was using Tamiya gloss black X-18 whereas I was intending to use flat black XF-1.
Luckily not a lot of black was used, so it does not look too glossy!

Think I'm finished painting now, added a few more touches, and added flat Ali to the fornt of the blade, as that would stay a bit shiny with use, also added flat Ali dry brushing to areas that would be worn, eg: track raised edges, seta cushions and arm rests, entry point up to the cab, plus a few moving/rotating parts, pivots, etc....
Will leave it all to dry for few hours, then it will get its gloss varnish coat and then washes/pigment.

Now added a rust wash (Ammo/Mig).
The kit comes with what are described as metal stickers for the main front badge. They are tiny!
They look like thick decals.
So like an eejit I tried applying them like decals, but nope, they have a very thin plastic coating, so do not dissolve/move like decals.
Next I tried removing them from the plastic and yes I got them off, but they would still not stick?
Eventually I figured out they are double coated, about like PE with the thin plastic on both side.
So after carefully removing the coating from both sides I eventually got them on with a dab of CA.
