discussion C4-Open Malmö, Sweden 2017

Visited C4-Open in Malmö, Sweden, today and took a couple of pictures.
It was a bit crowded so I couldn't take individual photos, but I took a bit of everything apart from the nautical section because some sort of "don't disturb us discussion" was going on and I just couldn't squeeze in between them...
It seems people are doing modelling here too and that's nice!

Anyhow, here are a couple of pictures!

SAAB 35 J Draken. One of the most beautiful planes we Swedes have designed! (along with Tunnan, Lansen, Viggen and Gripen of course... )

And SAAB 32 Lansen.

This figure was really beautiful! I'm not sure of the scale though but there were a few in this scale. 1/16 or 1/12 perhaps? (or is this 75 mm?) Very inspiring!

My oldest son who was with me really liked this totally rusted through and reclaimed by nature model. It was well made and very artistic!

This was my favourite on the whole show. Simplistic but yet realistic and very well planned and executed!
I'm currently trying to use real wood in my Mk.IV vignette and this is great for inspiration

I was trying to work out the difference between those who got nothing and those who got 3:rd, 2:nd and 1:st place but it didn't make sense to me? I just have to admit that I know precisely nothing about these competitions and I didn't dare submitting one of mine before visiting this event. I still haven't got a clue what they're looking for but I think I will submit a couple of my own creations next time. I don't care if I win or not, but there's a chance of getting pointers where to improve etc and that I'd like!

There were also a lot of commerce on the show but the prices were terrible so I bough nothing and I only picked up an order with my "local guy" who was at the show.
I was going to buy a couple bottles of MRP but the people selling it were almost £2 more expensive - per bottle - than I can buy them from another retailer so no MRP for me today.
I had hoped to buy some books and paint but they all wanted full price for everything, and some even more so no shopping for me. (but I came home with my new compressor and airbrush so I'm feeling pretty good anyway! )

Some great builds there.Im surprised the traders were asking high prices. Perhaps they have to pay a lot to trade at that show?.

Near-ish. 55 km or something like that.
I haven't been there for years though.

Not too long a journey then. I've been through Malmo a couple of times, on the way to somewhere else...

I wouldn't be surprised if they have to pay a fair bit of money in order to do business?!
A shame though because there were a lot of stores/tables there and they'd brought a lot of goods with them.
In the past I suppose shows like this was the time you could get the kits you normally couldn't get, but today with eBay and such things are very different...

I hope they all made a profit so they will come back next year!

One thing I did discover was that the majority of the kits that got placed in top three had figures (one or more) and only a few of the winners didn't. I'm talking vehicles here. Most of the aircraft didn't have figures.
Like I said earlier, I haven't got a clue how they come up with the scores because I saw models that I would've picked as winners - and got nothing, and others who got 3:rd or 2:nd place that I didn't understand why?
I guess it's all down to certain details and a combined score or something like that...?

Its always good to see what others are building and there are some nice finished works in amongst the pictures.

Thanks for the pictures Jens, a great and interesting collection. As for judging - I don't think anyone knows the answer. I look at two models in a competition, one gets a place, one doesn't, but they both look brilliant.

How judges work is a mystery. Originality, and the personal preference of the judge is a good part of the points. Also, dare I say, The use of add-on's. Some will judge a model filled with resin and brass extras, lower than a model that has just a little scratch built stuff or none at all.
There are many judges that still live in the dark ages and have the idea that it is a scale PLASTIC model contest and not a scale resin, brass, white metal and oh plastic model. Sad but I know it is true, in Denmark at least.

Even driving a 2.5T Range Rover was scary so I can vouch for it being windy!!! Normally I would've turned back, let alone even started, but I was going to pick up my new airbrush, compressor and a lot of smaller things at the show so I had to ignore the wind and just drive on. Luckily we arrived early and found parking just outside. (not legal parking but who's going to get you on a windy Sunday? )

I didn't know extras were frowned upon by some? I thought it was the opposite? Many of these kits were OOB (mostly) and they'd also written that on the entry form so it sounds like you're right there sadly...
I'd ordered a lot of balsa wood as well that I was picking up yesterday so if they hate anything that's not plastic they're going to hate me because I will use anything if I think it fits!
I've saved two lollipop sticks (white plastic tubes) to use as exhaust pipes for my Jagdpanther II since they're missing on that kit, and I'm using strips of brass and aluminium for detailing. I'm even building the hull out of wood for one, a bit larger, project!
I can sort of understand that two outstanding builds of the same kit weighs heavier for the one doing just OOB than the one replacing half of the kit - but then it should be different classes. One OOB only and one "anything goes".

I'm only doing this for the fun of it and that's what matters to me!

Drive a Large(ish) 4x4 as well. It may well be that they are heavy and tough, but they do rather catch the wind, dont they! The very thought of driving over the bridge was just a bit more than I could justify. lol.
