Some of you may have noticed that I have changed my avatar, it is the cap badge of The Parachute Regiment. I'm not normally the type to share this kind of post on a public forum, but I know that many of you admire what our Armed Forces do and would be sad to hear my news.

Sadly, my father passed away last month very suddenly and we were able to give him a send off to Valhalla last week with a load of his ex-Para mates forming a guard of honour for him.

Dad joined the Paras in the seventies and served in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Belize and Germany; but most notably, he went to the Falkland Islands with 3 Para and thousands of other British troops in 1982 to recapture the islands from occupying Argentine forces. He came home safely but many of his friends, some of them close friends, didn't. He was fiercely proud to be a paratrooper and had little time for marines or craphats. No scale of measurement has been invented to quantify how proud I am of him.

I've included some photos.

This photo was taken in Aldershot during the 30th anniversary parade for the Falklands Conflict. Dad is in the centre without his beret.

This was taken at RAF Gutersloh in 1977/8 while waiting to emplane for a battalion size jump; he's the miserable git with his arms folded looking really chuffed to be earning his para pay! He still has the old style helmet but recently introduced DPM para smock, army issue watch and even a Mae-West.

I wish you fair winds and a safe landing dad.

Thanks for looking.

Sorry to hear of your loss Rick. That is a touching tribute to your Dad, he would be proud. It sounds like he had a varied and exciting career with the Paras, no wonder he was so proud.

BTW, I did not for one moment think you changed your avatar to wind up our newest member, a former Royal Marine. :D

Condolences on your loss Rick and a lovely tribute to your father, may he jump in peace forever more.

Sorry to hear that, nice of you to change your avatar in his memory and give us a back story on why, no matter how sad the situation, I'm sure he'd be happy with your tribute though ;)

Happy coincidence! Every cloud and all that....

Sorry to hear that Rick but a very fitting tribute to a man you are obviously very proud to have as your father.

My condolences.

Sorry for your loss, Aldershot brings back some memorys though, lived there for a few years, my dad was based there.

That is sad for any son. Even at 75, my father left some 25 years ago, I often have very weak moments thinking of my dear old dad my best mate ever. If you have a good dad you have a bit of magic.

I have read all the Falklands books and so admired the bravery of the Paras and the Marines. Recently read a book by a corporal in the Paras and it was sad but also proud to think that they are British. I am very proud of our forces. You must be very sad indeed but very proud of your father Rick.

Sorry for your loss, but a very nice tribute to him, I am sure he is looking down and smiling.

Sorry to hear about your loss Rick, he would be proud that you have honoured him in just this fashion.
