The planes , I think, were almost in line abreast, with the top one in the photo closer to the camera and the bottom furthest away.

That is called stacking, due to using a long lens. The lens compresses the field of view so “stacking” the images on top of each other. Great shot that, wish I could see opportunities like that LOL
