I actually think 'Saving Private Ryan' should be compulsory viewing for all schoolchildren.. It might just help us to avoid going through it all again if we can get the next generation to understand the horror of being killed for something way beyond your control.

I don't know what I can really add to this thread but I like different films for different reasons.

'Saving Private Ryan' has got to be up there if only for the opening landing craft scene, which in my opinion, is now a classic piece of cinema. This film single handedly raised the bar in terms of realism and reinvented the war film genre.

Ice Cold in Alice is an absolutely great film and makes me thirsty every time - John Mills really enjoys that beer at the end!

Zulu, Great Escape, A Bridge too Far, Bridge over the River Kwai have great performances from Caine, McQueen, Hopkins, Guinness etc

(The bit where the army fires in ranks in Zulu would make a brilliant model)

I also like the more modern stuff: Black Hawk Down, Platoon and Full Metal Jacket

Another great film is the old black and white 'All Quiet on the Western Front'

It's very difficult to choose a favourite but if pressed I'll go for 'Ryan' for reasons mentioned earlier.

Cheers Paul

BTW, there's dozens, possibly hundreds, of modelling opportunities contained in these films!

Missed a whole page of posts in my eagerness to get in with Apocalypse Now. D'oh!

Am I allowed to like the Vietnam section of Forest Gump?

Also watched a film at my cousins about a small bunch of Aussies trying to hold the Japanese off on an island. Forget the name of it, there's a dream/hallucination scene with a lot of mud!

Or "Johnny got his gun". It won't be on anybody's list of favourites,it's a pretty desperate and despairing film/book,but you'd go a long way to find a more powerful anti-war film.

Cheers

Hmm....hard to say, but I'd probably go for:

1. Saving Private Ryan

2. Black Hawk Down

3. Band of Brothers

4. Kelly's Heroes

5. The Thin Red Line

Close runners up are Pacific and probably Enemy at the Gates, even though I hate Jude Law :P

I remember this one only because it was used in the Metallica video for their song One, very thought provoking stuff.

I don't think I could make a list that was 100% fair, but something along the lines of:

Platoon

Apocalypse Now

The thin red line

Full Metal Jacket

Stalingrad

Having never seen, although I knew of it, Ice Cold in Alex I saw it in HMV for a fiver today, got half way through before interruptions, thoroughly enthralled after getting over the slightly 'British' beginning. Looking forward to finishing it later, cracking film.

Does anyone do a kit of the ambulance????

The Austin K2 Ambulance in 1/48... - Photo Features

Will this help Graham..

Tony..

That will do nicely Tony. Never done a full resin kit, shouldn't be too hard to make front doors for it.

My all time top 3 war movies of all time have got to be:

1. Patton (George C Scott plays 'old blood and guts' brilliantly)

2. Tora Tora Tora

3. Battle of the Bulge.

I have loads more, which most of you guys have already mentioned so I won't repeat. I recently watched 'Mission of the Shark' which was a TV movie made in the 90's about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Stacey Keetch play the part of Captain McVay. Although the movie itself wasn't that bad, for a TV movies at least, I was shocked to see that they got some of the crew members names wrong. Especially the Doctor, as he played such an important role in keeping so many of the young sailors alive for days in the water.

All mighty fine films but nothing beats 'Saints and Soldiers'. A low cost movie, but one of the best films ever.

You can pick a copy up on e.bay for a couple of quid. There is one goes off in 50mins. for under a quid!....£6.00 gets you a Blu Ray one...

Please get a copy. Absolutely stunning. Totally unforgettable.

Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan, hands down! Thin red Line, Saints and Soldiers, We were soldiers and more recently on the Gulf War, Three Kings (Geoge Clooney was great in that one) and The Hurt Locker. I really liked another recent one, more about losing loved ones in the war, called "The messenger".

For thorough enjoyment on a budget

Dog Soldiers.

Based on true events I believe

Some interesting posts here :)

Has anyone seen the new Band of Brothers sequel? It's also a Hanks and Spielberg called Pacific - about the Marines Island hopping. Great series but is nothing compared to Band of Brothers.

So my great war films:

1) The Thin red Line

2) Brotherhood (South Korean film)

3) Letters from Iwo Jima

4)The Longest Day

5) Stalingrad (In Original German)

These films make me want to go bobbing for chips:

1) U-571

2) Pearl Harbour
