Favourite War films

Silver Fleet, oh yeah
Another couple set in the Netherlands not previously noted

Operation Amsterdam
One of Our Aircraft is Missing - how could I not mention that before!

Another less known, but cracking film, 'Days of Glory'. (2006) Both this and 'Saints and Soldiers' I mentioned earlier are both low budget gems, with relatively unknown actors.

A sheer coincidence, but it is being shown tomorrow (28/5) at 3.00pm on Talingpics TV (306 on freesat). I've set it to record - hope it is as nice as I remember.
Thanks for that Peter! I hope I can source it - and your recommendation is valid;)

A film part of the war but an unusual part to be portrayed.
A story of sadness then friendliness then love & nostalgia.

Superbly written filmed & edited. My favorite of all time.
John Thor plays a remarkable part.

Goodnight Mister Tom. with John Thor as Mister Tom.

A group of evacuated children from London descend on a
small village. Mister Tom a cantankerous widowed fellow is
persuaded to look after Willie.

They do not get on but by & by they grow on each other . A very lovely tale.

Laurie

The Foreman Went to France - another not in my collection - Tommy Trinder and Gordon Jackson double act - and a very good sequence on how a British squaddie (Trinder) spots a fake Officer

Mel Gibson's We Were Soldiers I don't think, has been mentioned........If so, apologies. Rick H.

A Bridge too far was my first war movie and one of my faves
also the Big Red one or anything with Lee Marvin in the military movie are also favs

Steve's (Rivet counter Jones) has stirred my memory banks and I recalled Burt Lancaster's From Here To Eternity, John Wayne's In Harms Way, Robert Mitchum,s Heaven Knows Mr. Allison, Humphry Bogart,s Caine Mutiny, and a little known not often replayed 50's film, On the Beach. Another favorite TV series was Herman Wouk's Winds of War and its sequel War and Remembrance......'ats it for now. Rick H.
Oh.....The Gallant Men and COMBAT were also Favorites on the TV in the 60's I just had to watch them!!
Anyone remember Rat Patrol?
Rat Patrol, When I first started driving my dad used to say don’t fly in driveway like “Rat Patrol” never knew what he meant till the internet came along and I watched it on YouTube one day. Lol.

Couple more come to mind, Von Ryan's Express, Bridge on the River Kwai, Father Goose, with Cary Grant, Wake Island, Battle Hymn and Gray Lady Down. TV series McHales Navy and MASH. Rick H.
Man your showing your age Rick.

Me being a Truck Driver another one of my favorites is “Red Ball Express” I remember watching this the first time in my teens. The Movie was released in 1952.

Here's another little know Gem from the 1950's. Starring Richard Basehart, (star of TV series, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea), Decision Before Dawn. I saw this one time only in the late sixties........never to be seen again. What was most memorable about it was the fact that there were a lot of shots of actual German equipment rolling down roads etc. might have been old newsreel footage but am unsure. Has anyone else seen this movie? Rick H.
Rick, I keep that tagged for vehical reference cos was amazed by the types shown that are now coming out in kit form from the Eastern manufacturers.

Cheers,
Richard

Bingo Richard!!!! My thoughts exactly.........the footage I saw was not your every day stuff and it intrigued the Hell out of me! I was very much into collecting the 1-87 scale Minitanks back then (nothing's changed) and I thought, wouldn't it be great if ROCO were to release some of those in their series, at some point.......well, some did and some did not appear. Sure would like to see that movie one more time....

Forgotten that one as well. Trinder, who can usually be a bit irritating, is very good in it.

He made quite a few films where he was the “comic” turn. In this one he comes across as likeable rather than irritating.

Now that the old ones are coming in - can't remember the title, but remember seeing it the once - a Norman Wisdom film where he plays a double role - a British squaddie and a German officer
