I had much the same feeling about it
Whist I was waiting I bought an Airfix Starter pack for £10. Just to practice. Oh my word what an utter pile of rubbish. Its a Hurricane although it’s hard to tell. Ok it’s 1/72 but the lower half of the wing is 1 mm longer than the upper. so lots of sanding down. The fuselage doesnt fit around the seat. There other things but this would put me off modelling if I didn’t know the story of moulds etc.
Also thanks to this forum I wasn’t expecting much but this hasn’t even met those expectations. To be frank it’s junk. But I’m going to persevere just to try things. My Tamika 1/48 Spit has just arrived so I’ll finish off the Hurricane then get started on the proper job

Gary, that is strange.
I built what I presume to be the self same 1/72 Hurricane kit for the 'Starter Set' G.B. on here last year and the fit, everything about it was nigh on perfect.

Variance in production runs ? Using lots of clamps to hold things together which is Ok. I’m not too bothered with the gaps either as I needed to practice my filling, sanding and fettling skills. Hardly any of the locating pins fit in the locating holes for instance.
So to be positive it’s useful. Now I’m determined to make the finished model almost perfect. I won’t be doing any weathering etc as i do prefer the factory fresh new look. Although I might experiment

it's sometimes good to build a poor model, struggling with poor fit, mismatches, shrink marks etc! It really makes you appreciate a good model when you lay your hand on one. - that 1/72 Airfix Hurricane, the 1/48 version is a completely different story , same maker, different scale
If the model you want is only made by one maker, you have to take what you can get. If, it is a popular subject, ( like the Hurricane ) then a little research & searching can get the best model for you, & don't always assume that it if it costs more, then it's better than a cheaper one!
Part of my enjoyment comes through the research, and hunt for a model - particularly if I get it a good discount price!

Gary, just try to enjoy it, hard to say I know I've had my fair share of dodgy models and Dave is spot on with his reply.
It good fun John. Needed to use this one to get warmed up and my car body shop experience is coming to the fore. Surprisingly its very enjoyable having something to do other than "just" sticking the bits together. Taking your time is key I'm finding and everytime I get too confident I have to slow down again. For a small model its suitably challenging. Glad I started modelling again already

Could be they have more than one set, one based on a recent Hurricane kit and the other on their 1960s model perhaps? Yours was this one:

According to 'Scalemates', the Airfix 1/72 Hurricane had a new tool in 1978 AND a new tool in 2013, so It's entirely possible that old stock is hanging around!

I picked it upon a whim as I was in Hobbycraft anyway. There's a hobby shop in Basingstoke who seems to know his stuff so if I feel the instant urge again thats what I do as I'm in town most days. Rest of my models I'll get from SMS. I might track down another 1/72 and have another go. For £10ish its not a "chore"

Going by Scalemates, this seems to be the same actual kit as the other one, just in a different box, and both are reissues of a model that was entirely new in 2013. This makes the fit problems very strange.
This is where Scalemates comes in. Using your kit as an example, if you scroll down the page a bit you will come across a (very extensive in this case) family tree diagram of Airfix Hurricane kits, so you can see which kits are reissues of which, and which ones are actually new.
They usually are, especially if they’re decades newer — assuming they’re from the same manufacturer, of course. Another manufacturer might well release a worse kit later on
