Been doing a bit of digging on the great man and just happened across a good piccy of his famous runaround. Sand coloured with green blotches right? Wrong.

Have a look at the "blotches" in this image.

Can you see:

A scorpion crawling through the first O

A rat like creature, maybe a Jerboa, climbing up the first T(maybe a gecko or chameleon though!)

Something I can't identify climbing up the second T

An elephant, nearly head on,inside the second O (Not sure about this one!)

There's a challenge for the decal makers!

This sort of thing makes trawling through a photo archive,or in this case posts in a forum, worth it! I don't think anyone had seen what was before their eyes,I spend too long looking at old photos

Cheers

Steve

Just looked at the 'Lifelike' Marseille decal sheet on Hannants site.Theyve included some sort of abstract pattern as Background of the word OTTO.Cant tell if its the same as in your photo. And it looks like theyve doe it in white to me.wouldnt like to try and replicate that pattern on a 1/32 Kubelwagon.

Steve, according to Sweet , who provide a bonus decal sheet for 'otto' in 3 scales (1/144,1/72,and 1/48) included with their 1/144 bf109f star of africa marseilles boxing, the animals crawling over the letters are all chameleons or snakes. After seeing various pictures i'd say theyve got it about right, obviously no-one can say for sure what the colours were ,have a look at the decal sheet on this linkhttp://www.sweetaviationmodels.com/14114Bf109FTrop.html And heres a couple of mine with the 1/72 decal used, i went for the sand/green blotches too! cheers tony

I think Hasegawa did that in a 1/24 boxing of a kubelwagon.

Thanks fellas,it's not just my eyes then! Great piccy John, though I'm not sure what that is on the first O.

Cheers

Steve

I would actually suggest that Steve's first picture and John's subsequent one show quite different animals around the letters and just go to show yet again that these things changed over time. They were probably repainted a number of times by some resident artist in the field and were 'upgraded' in the process. Consequently it would probably be difficult to say just what would be right and what would be wrong from a modelling perspective.

It would make a cracking model from the Revel 1/9th kit though wouldn't it? Does anyone do a decal sheet for that one?

Dont forget richard, the two black and white pics show the two different sides of otto, the animals were different on each side. tony
