My Royal Netherlands Air Force demo team F-16 is now finished:

I sprayed semi-gloss varnish over the model to seal in the decals and tone down the high gloss orange a bit.

The model is suspended from two steel rods in the smoke pods, which I painted white and then covered in PVA glue and cotton wool to replicate the smoke coming from the pods on the wingtips.

Here’s the whole display stand:

This is a 50 by 15 cm piece of perspex, bent at a 90 degree angle to give a horizontal bit of about 30 cm long, and two holes drilled for the steel rods (actually, those were added before bending). Bending the material was quite easy with a hot-air gun and a piece of wood held in a vice: I had first marked out where to bend, then heated that up as evenly as I could, and when it seemed bendy enough, I carefully pushed the free (short) end down over the edge of the wood.

Hi Jakko
Well that is a great and very inventive way to display it. I know you still have reservations about the paint job but it actually looks good so well done. I'd be happy with it.

Thanks, guys. I wanted a way to show the lion the correct way up, and though I at first thought of using the same method as on my Lightning F.6 (a perspex rod up the tailpipe), the F-16’s exhaust is far bigger and it would probably end up looking too thick. Happily, the steel rods seem to be enough to support the model — though it remains to be seen if the glue between the smoke pods and the wings will hold up :)

Great job , love the display , excellent idea . Its been a good watch and you should be well chuffed with the finished model , cheers tony

Stunning method of display Jakko, and a beautiful piece of work, well done.

Thanks. I’m well pleased with the stand, it came out as I had it in mind (for once) and was much less trouble to make than I had expected :)

Although you had your doubts about the orange paint, when finished it looks very nice Jakko. :smiling: :thumb2:

Fantastic idea and execution for the display:surprised:, hopefully the KLu will use a similar scheme for the Viper in this year’s Luchtmachtdagen (Airforcedays for the non Dutch) probably not…:sad-face:

I agree it looks nice — I just think it doesn’t look correct :)

Fantastic idea and execution for the display:surprised:
Thanks, and you too, Paul :)

Do they even still have a demo team? I thought I’d heard something about it being disbanded a few years ago.

That's one colourful F-16 Jakko. Awesome paint work, the display smoke brings the model to life and it is very well posed and photographed.

Great job and nice to see an aircraft in flight.

Top stuff. Both the build/paint & the display. PaulE

Cheers, guys :) I kind of like aircraft models in flight too, I find they often look better that way than on the ground. Now I wonder what I’ll do with my next one …
