Thanks for the nice comments one and all, I know I have a few days coming up when I won't be able to do any model making, so there may be a brief hiatus. I'm starting to exercise the old grey matter over the camouflage already. Let's just say opinions differ and I'm not sure where I stand...yet.

I haven't had any real issues with the fit. The kit is well engineered but, a big but, as a result the tolerances are just about zero. If you get one thing a millimetre out then the next thing won't fit properly. So far I've done okay, I've just made one slight adjustment to the front engine to get the cowlings square (only the top one positioned in the piccy). If you are going to make one of these then the mantra must be 'test fit' over and over again and as far ahead as is reasonably possible.

So I've concluded today working on the panels that will be closed and the nose. This kit would be easier to build all open rather than half and half as I'm doing.


I've also come across a kit part which is not up to scratch. This (sprayed a dark aluminium):

For such a nice kit I'm surprised by this. There is a piece of photo-etch for a hard to see grill in the air scoop but nothing for this. Fortunately, following a frantic rummage in various draws and boxes, I found a sheet or radiator honeycomb from RB Productions.

I reckon I can use this to improve the plain plastic of the kit part, but not until tomorrow as it's now a bit gloomy in Brum and it's not the kind of detail that is easily done under artificial light alone

Ooh !not exactly representative of the real thing steve, just smooth plastic. If the RB grille doesnt work you could try getting some bias tape from the sewing shop , this would cut easily with scussors or a craft knife and can be painted black and dry brushed to get the mesh effect , ive used it to simulate radiator grilles before and its quite effective. I posted about it in the unconventional materials thread ages ago , ill see if i can find it and put up a link , cheers tony

Oh, you must live the other side of Brum, in Solihull pretty much a sub-tropical paradise all year round





I have been catching up on this, can't help feeling that being sandwiched between two engines it must have been both noisy and hot for the aircrew. All round a funny looking aircraft but it does look the business in your hands.

I've applied the mesh. It's not perfect and the photo has revealed a couple of issues which I will address, but it is a vast improvement on a piece of bare plastic.

Not that I'm aware of, but to be honest I haven't really looked. There are some after market parts available independently (like the Eduard stuff I've used and the Maketar masks).


I've been having a bit of a nightmare with the closed panel over the rear engine, the open one will be no problem. My exhausts are a fraction of a millimetre too high which is preventing the exhaust panel which fits around the stubs, and outside panel lining up, which is a bit of a b*gger. This isn't something I could have tested up front. I may have to remove the exhaust stubs from that side of the engine and fit them to the closed panel....somehow.


I've got a couple of hours left today so hopefully I'll come up with a solution before things get put on hold for a few days.

Okay, so I've had to remove the stubs from one side of the engine. I then shaved 3mm of the bottom (to prevent my fix interfering with the engine itself) of them and squared them off. I attached the front and back stubs to the little exhaust frame panel as they are designed to fit and then glued a plastic strip between them to which I attached the remaining four stubs. Attach the exhaust frame directly to the opening panel and you're in business. Definitely a bodge, far better to get the exhausts correct first time around, or at least before it's too late, but nobody will know unless they read this thread!


It worked fine until I saw this picture and realised I've got a couple to straighten up

I've dropped the panel in after a bit more fettling, it is really designed to be posed open, but a little simple work enables it to be closed. This side will have the front engine open and the rear closed.

The other side will have the front closed (these exhausts lined up okay) and the rear open.

I got back to it this morning and have spent a few hours assembling the various bits and pieces I had already constructed. The result is something that finally looks more like an aeroplane!

It almost goes without saying that everything has fitted very nicely.


Even for someone like myself, used to building in larger scales, this is a BIG model.
