HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Scratchbuilt Gunnery Control Room / Tower No 2

Well after 2 weeks of construction and some scratch building here’s is the 2 nd Gunnery Control Centre mounted on the classic tripod mast layout it is now ready to be fitted to the main deck of the ship

Remember me sorry peeps I had to take a 4 month break from modelling due to unsteady hands and trembling fingers
This has now subsided to a point where I can now hold a pair of tweezers and again be able to tie knots
When we last heard from me I had constructed the front tripod mast and associated gunnery control I have now mounted this onto the model and also rigged the front mast and funnels and added a ton of detail to the rear of the ship see attached photos
Next up will be to add the main gun turrets then the rear mast and rig this before adding the joining rigging lines between the two

Wow...real labour of love there Colin. I have a real admiration for wood ship builders. Detailing is superb and undeterred by the unsteady hands and trembling fingers.

Thanks for your kind words it was really frustrating I couldn’t even hold a paintbrush steady enough to paint at one time when it was really bad
On my way home from work now will attempt to get the main gun turrets fitted tonight

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Main Guns Now Fitted

So a relatively easy stage this just had to file out the holes in the barbets and the bottom of the turrets to fit in the pin that allows the turrets to be rotated the fit is so tight no glue is needed
Next I got a1/32 roundel from a Revell 1/32 Spitfire for some reason must have been Far Eastern pacific as it had a white centre I believe this was to avoid confusion with the Japanese aircraft carrying the red circular roundel anyway I mounted this onto the turret and after several applications of Micro Sol the decal settled down onto the surface I then painted the inside white area red to represent the aerial indentication roundel whether the Hood had it at the time of the battle of the Denmark Straits I don’t know but I’ve seen several depictions of it so I decided to include it as it gives a splash of contrast to the two tone grey colour scheme
After this it was a simple case of push fitting the turrets into place the higher of the two on the front in the instructions it’s labelled as turret 3 has to have a multiple Pom Pom gun set added to it but appart from that the turrets are now complete next we move onto the main mast at the stern end of the ship

Correction not a Pom Pom but one of those primitive rocket launchers they were supposed to be fired at any incomming aircraft and as they climbed they spew out a long trailing wire which I suppose was to snag anything vital from the incoming airborne threat presumably the propellers

Are you thinking that it's a TOW (Tracked Optical Wire) system mate? If so the wire is not designed to snag enemy aircraft, it's a command system. I suspect that's a little too early for TOW - I stand to be corrected however!

The box-thing that sits atop B turret is an 'Unrotated Projectile Launcher,' UP. The rocket they launched carried a small charge attached to a parachute, trailing a long length of wire. The attacking 'plane was, indeed, supposed to snag the wire and pull the charge onto itself.
They were about as rubbish as they sounded, but apparently Winston thought they were a wizard wheeze as, no prizes for guessing, they were another of Professer Lindemann's ideas. There's no record of one ever having any effect at all, other than injuring three rratings when they spontaneously fired while in Gibraltar in July 1940. They were supposed to be removed before she sailed to meet Bismarck. Worse yet, one of Prinz Eugen's hits detonated in the ready-use magazine for the 4" and UP ammo, killing many of the AA crews where they were sheltering, as related by Bob Tillman, one of the survivors.
