Hi here’s a little update on how things are going, started off by fairing the hull which took quite a few hours to get right and then started on planking the gallery and laying the first plank.


The instructions call for the first row of planking to be laid with the bottom of the plank being lined up with the bottom of the lower gun deck and then continuing up for the first 6 planks and then marking where the bulkheads are on the planks this then becomes one side of the gun ports and the top of the first plank becomes the bottom of the gun port.


As suggested in the mag I made myself a small jig for marking out each of the gun ports which are 12mm square with 16 gun ports on each deck to make, so far the quality of the wood is good with no uneven size planks that can be found sometimes and with a little soaking in water are easy to bend using the plank bender that was supplied.


At first I tried using the plank bender without soaking the planks but with limited success breaking more than I bent but now I have no problems at all with bending them after about a 10 min soak.


The files and pin pusher that also came with the series are not the best quality but so far doing their job but I’m not sure how long the pin pusher will hold out, but that’s not a problem as I have my other one anyway.

Looking good. I worked out in Saudi in the nineties. A mate I shared a villa with was building a similar sized Victory. I often wonder if he got it home in one piece!.

That's looking good Steve. I only ever did one planked hull so I know it can be hard going. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished job on that.

hi all


Over the past couple of days I have been busy marking out the lower gun deck ports and planking some more of the upper part of the hull. After marking out the gun ports it is said in the magazine that you should scribe them with a sharp knife and cut them out in small sections all the way along which I did attempt but found this not to be suitable for me anyway so out came the multi tool and I attached the small router bit and did them that way even then it took over an hour to cut out the 16 gun ports each side.


I then spent the next few hours sanding the ports to size and also sanding the planking to level things up abit and reduce the time I will need to take sanding the upper hull later, I have now planked the forward bulkhead before carrying on with the hull planking from there and this takes me upto issue 26 of the magazine and once the glue on the forward bulkhead has dried I will turn the hull over to mark out the stern gun ports and cut them out in the same way as the others.


All in all so far I am finding the planks are sitting well on the hull without much fairing needed if any and they are level up both sides and I only needed to taper 2 or 3 of the planks by 2mm or so to keep an even run.

Ok well it’s come to that time again where I have to put everything away and get ready for another month at work so I won’t have anything to post now until July when I get back so hope you all have an easy time with all your builds and see you next time.

Some great work there Steve. I have done a couple of plank on frame builds and they are time consuming and can be tricky at times, looks like you have gotten to grips with this one and are doing a sterling job.

Thanks for the kind words at a Length of 4ft 2in Height 2ft 10in and weighing in at 22lbs it will be too big for a mantle piece steve and to be honest still not sure where i will put it or i should say where the boss will let me put it lol, anyway just a little update on what i have been doing i have now got all 3 rows of gun ports cut out using my multi tool will a small mill bit and then squaring them off with my knife and file, its slow going and a bit fiddly but getting there

You have got (most) of the gunports sharp and square. That, I think, is very important for a crisp and convincing model. I look forward to the finish (and to seeing all that rigging!).

Well not a lot i can tell you about the last few days except i have cut all the gun ports out on both sides and cleaned them up which took the best part of 8hrs over 2 days and then i began sanding the top half of the planking just using a piece of wood with sand paper wrapped around it and plenty of elbow grease, and today i began laying the first planks of the lower hull so no photos today as their is no visible progress but hope to have some in a day or two.

I agree, this must be the worst part of the standing rigging. The running rigging is more interesting.
