Hi All! :xyxthumbs:

Time ago someone ask which magazine the members bought. There was many different replays....

But now my question is...? They influence in your hobby?

You see and read it, then you think...will try to do the same, will copy that or love this model and will build one...

Or maybe you look like a far 'thing', never will have this level skill, and will never buy this quantum of paints...!

In my case, the response is: I learn a lot, specially with 'the weathering magazine'. I copy the tricks, and the most important, try to do new ones with they. And a curious thing is, this magazine 'wake up' again my passion for the Sci-Fi models!!! You will see me build robots and space ships during a while now...

:grinball2:

Cheers

I don't buy magazines any more Polux but years ago my cousin bought the model train mags and I used to read them, I got some good ideas and tips for scenery and scratch building, probably influenced me enough for me to enjoy it so much now

I picked up a rather 'thin' model magazine in 'smiths the other day. It was £4.25 for not many pages ! I didn't buy it.

I stopped buying magazines for the same reason.....the price and how lititle you got for the cost.

But I do admit that some of the articles are very inspiring and knowledgeable, but to be truthful I tend to buy books on the topic of modelling, these are stacked with topics on the vehicles, kits and tips and hints on modelling etc.

i bought one copy of the new airfix mag when it first came out..........never bothered since,........magazines are far too expensive for what you get, specially since you can get much much more via t'internet

They are very pricey for the free info you could get on the internet. But you could say CD albums are pricey compared to downloading from itunes. In my view, both CDs and magazines have their place still. Sometimes it's nice to "pick up & read" rather than "browse".

Just MHO

The only magazines I buy are the MIG products weathering ones sold by John

I havent really bought any model mags for a few months now,(when i did they were the usual suspects (Airfix, Tamiya and FineScale Modeller)).

As for influenced by them, so far not at all. They are good for ideas, but the one thing that spoils any builds (this might also include builds on this site as well folks.....sorry) is the use of aftermarket tools/kits. I do not have a model shop nearby and because of my financial situation (constantly broke), cant afford to buy from the internet either, (so unless I use a bit of imagination, which most of the time I do) i build straight out of the box.

I also tend to use artist acrylic rather than specific model paints, and so far (fingers crossed) have had no problem with paints.

I still buy a monthly mag, model aircraft international, which at £4.20 is a little pricey. I like to read it when I want some inspiration, and even if the the some of mags builders like to use more after market items than there were original kit parts and they can be a bit rivet countery, they make superb models. The mag also does regular pieces about particular aircraft, operations or theaters of operations, the current one is about "Operation Huskey" which I was unaware of, which is good.

You pays your money etc.

I just need somewhere to keep 'em all now lol

Tony.

I was influenced by a little model magazine book for beginners which I got when I was a kid, and that sparked the building of model aeroplanes back then. Apart from buying the original first four Tamiya magazines in the 1980s (?) I've never bought any more model magazines. Most of the information I want can be found easily online with a bit of searching. I wish I had held onto those Tamiya magazines though, I saw a few of them selling for ridiculous prices online.

Bought 3 one for each year I have been model making.

The last I bought looked exactly like the first I bought. Space was occupied by the same adverts which seemed to take up 95% of the space.

The major difference I have seen over 3 years is the hike in cost.

Think that money is best spent on the "how to do it" books which more or less concentrate on a particular aspect.

That is my moan for the day (except for the ones I keep up my sleeve for later).

Thanks for your replies guys!

There is an unquestionable thing, the imagination is neither in the magazines or in Internet, is in ourself.

I agree totally with you here (if only I had imagination)

Most of my tool kit and spares comes from bits and bobs i pick up, and i do mean pick up, its amazing how many strips of metal and plastic one can find (even on the street): soldering wire, (electric and plastic wiring from canabalised electric heaters, halogen indoor heaters, i find give off a lot of heat at the expense of not lasting very long, so are good for wiring).

Necessity is the mother of invention etc etc (or no money is the mother of imagination and initiative)

Interesting replies.....Polux I agree, you can't buy imagination.

Personally, I've never bought a modelling mag., and it seems I'm not alone. I must confess to once standing in front of the W.H. Smith's mag rack.....(No sniggering) and discovered the mod. mag to be full of adverts and not much else.

As has been pointed out, why waste money on an expensive mag. when there is a darn sight more info. on the Web...and of course this great forum!

Also, if folks try and copy pro. builds from the mags, this could well lead to utter frustration if the result is not "As good"....Far better go your own way, in your own style, because no two modellers will produce the same result.......

Judging by the replies, perhaps the days of model making magazines are coming to an end, who knows?

I buy one mag a month and have built up a large pile of them which I keep at work.I read them in my tea/lunch breaks.Have read the same magazines several times and get a lot of inspiration from them.Although it does annoy me when lots of after market bits are used as I prefer out of box builds.

Agreed - not everyone has a publisher's budget to buy all the aftermarket stuff. I like the Airfix mag these days, caters for the "this is what you get" gang more so than the others.
