discussion Hurricaine Mk 1 3 views perhaps??

Does anyone maybe have some 3 views of the Hurri Mk 1 please? I am building a 1/8 RC model and would like to see the stringers and wing fabric.

PS, did the Mk1 operate during the BOB? any well known aces fly them then?

Hi Theuns,will look for drawings,unfortunately "the boss" has got builders in and I can't even get to most of my books!

The Hurricane Mk I was the mainstay of Fighter Command during the BoB,generally accepted from a British perspective to have run from July-October 1940.

There were many men who became aces flying the Hurricane. Bader did fly Hurricanes throughout the battle and became an ace,he was already credited with one destroyed (Bf 109) from the Battle of France.

A few more well known ones: Brothers,Gleed,McKnight,Frantisek,Urbanowicz.

Less well known: Richey,Clowes,Bird-Wilson,Gracie,Ortmans,Lee,Kent and then some more Poles, Krol,Henneberg,Feric and Pisarek.

There are many more but that should give you something to start with!

It would be nice if there were any Sout African aces flyng them, folks like Adolph Sailor Malan and Marmaduke "Pat" Pattle.

I do however think Pat only flew in North Africa and later Greece. As I understand Pat was maybe the highest scoring "imperial" ace with 62, any truth in this?

He flew mainly Gladiators and the Hurries.

Just for interest sake, I will start a thread of my RC Hurricane I am busy with, the fuselarge is taking shape nicely. Will be trying some of the plastic painting and weathering on it.

My top 3 South African aces who flew Hurricanes are.

1: The fantastically named Marmaduke Thomas St John Pattle (no wonder they called him Pat) with 41 destroyed,26 whilst flying Hurricanes.

You are correct that he flew in North Africa,Greece and the Balkans.

2: Petrus Hendrik Hugo with 22 destroyed,6 flying Hurricanes.

He flew in the BoB.

3: Albert Lewis,18 destroyed,all whilst flying Hurricanes.

He also flew in the BoB,he was a close friend of Richard Lee who I already mentioned. Lee was KIA 18 Aug 1940.

Drawing a discreet veil over "The Battle of Barking Creek" Adolf Malan (no wonder they called him "sailor") was a successful pilot and great commander but I think he flew Spitfires in the BoB.

Steve, you do not perhaps have the side code and sqn # thet Petrus Hugo had on hid Hurri? By the looks of that pic it seems to ba early land temperate sceeme with the full fin flash? Mk 1 perhaps?

I have the plans to build a Spit Mk 1A aswell, but the Hurri just looks so much "meaner" ,ugly as hell, but made to do the job.

I would be happy to get you guy's input on my RC Hurry build when I post, just remember it is not TamiGawa scale LOL!

The only picture I have of "Dutch" Hugo (he had a strong Afrikaans accent) he is sat in the cockpit of a Hurricane but no markings are visible. During the Battles of France and Britain he served with 615 Sqn. Their Hurricanes looked very much like that of Lewis in the picture above,though the squadron code was KW. They were Mk Is at the time and would have been in the Temperate Land Scheme (TLS) during the BoB period.

I don't know which aircraft (letter and serial) Hugo flew most often. I'll have a quick look in case I've missed a picture somewhere!. The 615 Sqn.Operations Record Book (ORB) definitely survives as I've seen excerpts quoted from it. I've not seen it myself but it might have more information.

The Hurricane that he force landed on 16th August was P2963. Shot down by Bf 110s

The Hurricane he force landed on 18th August was R4421. Shot down by Bf 109s

If I can find the individual aircraft identification letters for either I'll let you know. All I know at the moment is that it wasn't P

Incidentally he was shot down a third time on 27th April 1942 flying a Spitfire BL248......lucky man
