Ian M's HMS HOOD. Trumpeter 1/200

Flipping 'ekk, this is steaming ahead..... must get my finger out, now if I only knew what my finger is in and where I put it.....

Nice start Ian. Where are you getting your refs from? I ask only in so much as I'm going to need a lot of reference material when I get on to the Bismarck. I'd like it to be as accurate as poss and I fully intend buying the Pontos detail set for it.

As I said over on Graham's thread, I will be watching this keenly.
Great subject, great start good modelling skills - what's not to like?!!!

All the best

@tr1ckey66 most of the info is coming from the hood association but I also have a book, anatomy of the hood.
The website has a full rip down of the trumpy kit with all its pit falls. There is a link to it in an earlier post. I found a great site for the Bismarck as well a while back. Think it was in German though. I'll try find it again if you like....
I was the pontos set for the Hood. Well I saw the thumbnail. For £240 I would like to be able to see what you got for your dosh!

put it in a dock yard have more room to move to big for your room where are you going to sleep, I bet the navy is looking for it after it shrunk a lot in the sea and you got it as a model really, with out them knowing you brought it as a kit in-disguise for yourself to build Ha! Ha!:D:D

This looks great Ian.
I read through the link to the Hood site you posted and it seems that overall it's a pretty good kit. Some of the more obvious errors look to be easily corrected, as you have just demonstrated above.
I'm looking forward to the next installment !

Cheers

I agree it's an interesting read Steve. The first time I looked though it I thought Yikes! But it is not that bad if you just take it a step at the time.
Talking of which...

The structures under the boat deck are now in place and ready to receive the actual boat deck. But....... not ready with that bit yet:
View attachment 273391
The splinter shield at the end of the boat deck was not round as Trumpeter would have us believe, but was in fact flat at the end. also there are two small shields that angle back inboard. Also the 'wooden' deck did not extend into the curved part. that was steel.
View attachment 273392

The two shields either side of the ship, above the opening here, did not extend inboard. So they get the chop...
View attachment 273394 View attachment 273395
Then its just scribe the planking in again...
View attachment 273396

These two also need a bit of work...
View attachment 273393
They just need a bit cut off as they where not symmetrical..View attachment 273398

The last of the shields that need work needed both a bit cut off and a bit stuck on!
View attachment 273399
Not sanded down yet as the glue is not fully dry. As bit of filler and what not and they should be OK.

The is a picture or two that got swapped round....Sorry but you get the idea...

Really coming on Ian. Love the modifications you are making.

On a side note, I was minding my own business browsing Scale Model Shop as I needed a few gallons of primer ready for Bizzy. What did I find? A 1/350 kit of Ark Royal:eek: Will somebody please buy it and save me from myself???

That could well be my next ship Graham. Just have to save up a bit....
My next task with the Hood will be drilling out more windows. Square ones! Which would be a lot easier if I could find my square drill!

Should be next to the triangular one ;)

That Ark Royal looks a nice kit for the money as it comes with some etch for the necessities. Glad you have had armarked it, I don't have to rob a bank now :D

Looks great Ian seems to have a lot of errors for an expensive kit, your doing a grand job of putting them right though.

Looking good, I presume you are looking at the HMS Hood web site for the corrections to the blast shields, whihc I found a font of knowledge when I was building mine.

As I have mentioned a few times yes I am. A very helpful place to have up on the iPad while working on her.

So today's update. An hour here and there during the weekend saw the aft conning tower, which I think was the torpedo control and targeting tower, go under the knife.. For such a little part there was a loot of things that where not as they should be for Hood at the time in question.View attachment 273749
The large square windows around the back end at bottom of the tower were plated in and two scuttles either side of the door added. I was not sure if the window in the door was also blanked off and have not seen a photo that shows it. So I let the door in the window stay....For now. If someone knows for sure, let me know before I paint it and stick it in place!
The windows around the bowed top section also needed a little visit. the center window was in fact one wide window and not the two as per the kit. You might also have seen that an extra opening has appeared..This was to access the searchlights on the above deck.View attachment 273747
The step down on the kit part was just never there. So Trumpeter made that bit up! The step is now corrected to the single large platform. Also the door and ladder on the center section has been removed. Never happened. On the deck above the corresponding hatch has also had to be removed. The 'square thing' in the middle of the fairings around the upper deck where also found to be incorrect. they might have been the signal flag locker that was placed the deck side of the fairing just left of the opening. The shielding around the searchlight stations was only half the height of the rest of the shielding. So a spray deflector was added all the way round and that is about that! Phew.

I will put the last few bits on this later when my fingers have recovered from all the drilling and cutting of windows and doors!

My first encounter with the dreaded PE. I really dont know what I hate the most. PE or Superglue. lol
There are some things you just want to stick instantly the first touch. This was one of those times. It took at least six tries before the Sodding things stayed put!
Oh the little 'shed' here was moulded with an open top. Not sure the radio op would have been to pleased about that, so I gave him the roof that was missing.

I am now sitting waiting for the paint to dry on the hull so not a lot more happening today...

WEM admiralty Anti fouling red. Lots of it! When It has cured, I will do the sides in AP507C then the boot topping in black last.
I know that at this time in the ships life she was AP507A when she went down. I just think that she looks so much nicer in her foreign service colour of AP507c
I also think that in the Dark Admiralty Grey, it would look very dark and dismal.

I will close with a thought. Trumpeter are slowly working their way through the ships that hunted the Bismark. We have the Bismark, the mighty Hood, Rodney and Nelson....When are they going to give us the Ark? Can you imagine that in 1/200. The wife would kill me lol.

Hey Ian
This build is moving on a pace. The accuracy/dateline mods are looking good. Keep up the great work.

Ark Royal would be awesome. With a full complement of 1/200 aircraft that would be sweet!
I'd pay my money!

Cheers

I was just wondering so I worked out how big the Ark would be in 1/200.........
Smaller than the Hood! the Hood was 860ft the Ark 800ft. But it would still be a very impressive model. We will have to wait and see.
I must say that so far I am rather enjoying this build. So much so that I might just start to save up for another. The Bismark? Hmm.
