Ian M's Lancia Stratos HL. Hasegawa, 1/24

If you are using an airbrush then slightly thicker white gloss paint sprayed at a lower pressure from a greater distance than normal could give you the desired effect, try on something scrap first. Good luck.

the majority of rally cars are white underneath which helps identify oil leaks etc.
But were they in the 1970s/80s as well, or is that a modern thing? It’s proving surprisingly hard to find photos of the underside of a rally version, though.

Fair point, when I did club rallying in South Africa in a 1963 Saab it certainly was not white - mostly red dust mixed with oil! Later in a Datsun 1600 J it was whatever the factory did to it.

One of the sexiest looking cars ever.....and that glorious Dino engine noise :blow-kiss:

This pic any help?

Going for a white bottom. :flushed:
No photo today but I primed today and if needed it will get a gentle rub down before the real fun starts. Found out I am out of white Humbrol gloss. I might just have to try some of those Mig Cobra car paints.

I told my pusher I would give them a try. Six jars to paint two colours.... Meh from left to right:
Black paint, White paint. thinners for the paint. 2K hardener and clear then the thinner/cleaner for the 2K..... I cant see anywhere that this could go wrong... lol

Well the white is down.

The cobra paint covers well and not to smelly. Its still wet in the picture but will dry mat. Then I just need to get all the detritus out with a light rub.
Oh I painted the wheels yellow as well. funny story in that one.
I have some Vallejo Yellow which I shook the sh............erlock out of and squirted some in my shoot glass, a bit of thinner and a splash of retarder. mix it all up well and into the airbrush. It sprayed really well. It just didn't cover. Then I was I had grabbed the clear as in transparent yellow, not the normal yellow. Duh! A quick clean, of wheel and airbrush and tried again...

Bit of chrome on the lugs and black on the valve hat....

Dried up a bit now. Its very white!
And yes Bob I have a full face with active carbon filter, spray booth and two windows and an outside door! I have been warned that they totally pen and ink!

I will let it cure for a day or two. Maybe.

That looks great Boss! That white went on very well too. I can really understand your grabbing the wrong yellow and shooting a coat on the wheels. I did the same thing by first applying Micro Sol, instead of Set, to the surface and wondering why I couldn't get the decals to move into place. It must be an old age thing...

Prost

Hope you have a good respirator Ian, from what I've heard the 2K fumes are nasty.
Without being a scaremonger, that can't be overstated. I'm still amazed that it's allowed in our hobby.

Isocyanates (found in 2k,and to a lesser degree in other automotive Paint) are the main cause of occupational asthma in the UK, with guys like me having a 90 times higher risk of getting asthma than the rest of the working population. (source: UK health & safety executive)

As modellers the concentrations of isocyanates are obviously significantly lower, but still, not something to take lightly.

Great looking build and subject. There's a couple of kit car types still available these days, not exactly pocket money kit cars though..

You can’t really regulate a hobby, of course, except by banning things completely (or at least for non-licenced use).
or like the Tamiya crisis a while back just refuse them export to "insert country here" until they get their documentation and labeling up to spec.
But being from within the EU makes it easier to get away with.
Anyway, back to the work bench:

Got all the gubbins and dangly bits sorted, bar the Fire extinguishers. they need another coat of paint.

The new 2K clear got a try. Tomorrow we find out if I got the 2:1 ratio right. I saw two videos about this product both just say 2:1 then add thinners...Hmm
I found a new pair of eyes and read the label on the bottles. 1x hardener 2x lacquer So hopefully all should be well. It looks like it is settling out well.
One video was rattling on about four coats with rubbing and polishing between each coat. The other said give it a mist coat then go right in with a wet coat.
Guess which way I went. lol.

'Bottom painted matt black then white over the top. The motor and the spine need a swipe of paint again I can see.

If all is well and the clear dries and hardens. I can do the interior that is attached to the inside of the shell, befor I have to get the body over the chassis! It is a tight fi t and even Hasegawa warn it is hard to get off again.

More later. Off to get new tyres on the real car.
