Here is my Bf109E, flown by german WWII ace Josef "Pips" Priller, G51 during the autumn in 1940.
I've had this kit laying around and collecting dust for ages, so I finally decided to give it a go. I had to pick apart the cockpit and sand it down after my lousy attempt at hand painting it nearly 20 years ago. The same with the engine block... it looked absolutely horrible!
The overall fitment was actually better than I expected, and I got away without using one bit of filler. Some mild sanding was required, but nothing too bad. The spinner and antenna was originally painted white (per the Airfix paint scheme guide in the kit), but I decided I liked them better in olive drab green. In addition, I chose to paint the upper area between the cowling and the canopy yellow (this particular aircraft had at it's appearance changed at least a few times) As usual, I went with Tamiya acrylics: XF-23 Light blue for the fuselage with spots of XF-74 Olive drab. XF-22 RLM grey for landing gear and a 50/50 mix of olive drab and XF-50 Deep green for the wings. The cowling and tail rudder was painted with XF-3 Flat yellow. For weathering, I applied various AK products. I was convinced that this kit would be a PITA because of the relatively old tooling, but I was surprised. I also enjoyed working with a large scale model, I'm used to building 1/48 scale planes. Enjoy!

I love Oberst Priller! Lol made a cool appearance in The longest day classic. I don’t do aircraft models but it’s well done :thumb2:

Nicely done Marius.
Having done one sometime back it is a nice kit to build and as you said not much filling and sanding to do. My decals were old being a kit bought in the early eighties. I have a blog of the build that I will put up one of these days.

Cheers,
Richard

Thank you, gentlemen. Richard, I was surprised to see that the decals hadn't turned yellow or disintegrated. I'm looking forward to seeing your build blog :)

Fantastic job marius , these airfix 1/24 kits still make great models , cheers tony

Nice build, it looks like a very large model in 1/24, very cool ;)

Cheers

Thanks again! Yes, the 1/24 scale is just about perfect for this type of aircraft, as it gives you loads of opportunities to make the details stand out. The only issue will be enough shelf space:smiling:
I apologise for the sad quality of the photos, I'll try to take some new ones with a better camera...

Hi Marius, the decals were brittle and needed varnish before cutting closely and soaking. I used what I could that's why the markings are fictitious.

Cheers,
Richard
