As part of a charity event for the Sheffield Children's Hospital I've been asked to paint this sculpture in a local schools colour. The kids will then decorate it, and it'll be displayed alongside 150 others, plus 150 larger ones in an effort to raise money.

The school had a low budget, but obviously I've offered to do it for free.

This is how it arrived

Allegedly primed and ready for paint, previous experience with fiberglass moulds told me otherwise. I couldn't see much in the matt white so it had a few coats of shiny grey primer, which would help to highlight any imperfections

As I suspected, there were plenty 😁 mostly where the various sections had been joined together.

They need this by the 20th so I'm fitting it in around other jobs. Next up will be a good sanding and another round of primer.

Great side project andy and a brilliant cause , our very own childrens hospital . Looking forward to seeing the lion around town , cheers tony

Thanks everyone, I always like to give back when I can.

After filling and sanding the imperfections (most of them anyway) I gave it another round of finer primer, tinted towards the final colour with a bit of blue & red

Then it was on with the colour. RAL 4005 Blue Lilac, which is the closest match I could get to the school's colours.

It's not the best finish in the world as I used a super durable industrial coating, PPG Selemix, since it's likely to get knocked around by school kids, but I'm sure they'll be more than happy with it compared to slapping some emulsion on as they'd previously planned 😂

Great finish Andy. Now if only I could replicate that super gloss finish on my models.

Great finish Andy - wish my Vallejo paint had a PPG Selemix super durable industrial coating lol
