discussion Masking over Decals.....

Has any one tried maskol over decals. I have a small problem with my Jag in the group build.

Any other safe ways of masking over decals with out damaging them ?

Ian maskol will eat into you varnish over decals as it contains ammonia.

I've done it with Post-It notes.Not a complicated edge though.

I'd think about giving them a coat of Klear to protect them before masking too.

If the decal is well set and varnished over the low tack Tamiya masking tape should be OK.

Wow this is a magnitude one disaster unfolding. Are you saying the one for all & all for one Klear has an Achillies' heel.

I wouldn't use Maskol. Just use a very low-tack tape or Post-its. But I would definitely protect the decals first.

Simple, give it a coating of Microscale Micro Gloss, nothing gets through that. Cheers Derek

Ian just noticed this thread and posted up in your build about using silly putty for a mask as its very low tack. I used it over the decals on my 217 build to correct the grey area around the Balkenkruez and it did'nt harm the decals at all.

Problem solved. I took a deep breath, and some masking tape.

I destickyfied (now thats a new word) the tape (Tamiya's finest) by sticking it to the back of my hand and removing it about 6 - 8 times. After that it was just sticky enough that it held its self in place. A new #11 in the scalpel and cut it in situ on the model.......

There where a few tiny spots that needed a touch up afterwards but I think I pulled it off.

Its a good job that for once I mixed up more of that orange colour than I needed first time round. Imagine trying to match that up!!!!

Thanks for the tips. I am sure that they will be used at some other point in time.
