All the bits for the tracks are now off the sprues and cleaned up ......... Tomorrow I'll start putting them together.

So after three evenings work, I have a couple of takeaway containers full of link parts.........

The parts on the left are in pairs on a central sprue. They are easier to handle while fitting them to the links then they just snip off, and you use the other end, then snip that off............ The rubber bits in the middle are the outer joining links. They stay on the sprues in "fives" and are fed into the jig that way, and are trimmed off afterwards.

I still haven't decided if the rubber pads are going on or not ............. Depends whether I finish it as a "parade" or "combat" tank.

Would I be correct in assuming that a "Parade Tank" would have them on ............ and a combat tank would go with the plain metal tracks? ........... Or are there variations on that ???

Most american tanks like the abrams have there rubber pads on regardless, not sure about russian tho :\

Looking nice tho!

There is a set of parade tracks available, not sure it is by Trumpeter or one of the new Asian companies.

Thanks Steve ....... I think, after doing a bit more research. I'm going to build this "In Anger". I just ordered up the July 2013 back order of MMI, there is a set of "Tactical Decals" for this kit with it........ So i think it might well get some weathering after all.

Welcome back to the 'dark side'

I made a start on putting these together......... It's a bit fiddly but I think I have the measure of it. Fitting the side joiners took a bit of working out . The destructions shows putting 5 on a sprue into the jig then trimming them off before fitting.......... I found it easier to cut the little buggers off the sprue and load 5 into the jig with tweezers..... takes a little longer but is easier........ Anyway here are the first couple of sections done.

They look grey in the photo....... But that is th dodgy lighting. They are definitely black.

Welcome to purgatory Dougie:eek:

I`'ve finished one track. 81 links...... 324 pieces..... Made a start on the other track and now I`'ve given up for today......... It's quite fiddly and repetitive.....and its done my nut in....... I`'ll get it finished tomorrow..... I reckon, time I`m done it`'ll be over 20 hours just on the tracks.

That post needs reporting... for being outrageous! 20hrs on tracks, you will go nuts o_O

I wish I had the time mate, I really wish I could find a day a week to sit, relax and build. I just put on another thread that Ive only finished 1 model this year (it was part built) and I have one part finished and I did lucys wee car with her. I feel extra guilty because Iv'e bought so many car kits I can't bear not having the chance to do. At least they won't go anywhere! ARGH...The frustration of time disappearing through your fingers!

I'm sure when all the tracks are done you will feel like you have really accomplished something, I'm not sure what that something will be ;) but something will have been accomplished!

It does seem a bit extreme when every other kit I built had the rubber band tracks........But I wanted this kit so I am dealing with all the complex bits that come with it:)

They may be a chore but I really think individual track links are worth the effort. I'm sure that all those hours will show when this great looking kit is finished.

Looking forward to seeing this Russian tank progress.

Cheers

Lucky you then, my magic tracks are green and the washes seem to give it a semi gloss, shiny look and a sticky feel. Wonder if a matt varnish would take the sticky-ness away but still allow them to bend.?
I always use water based acrylics {craft crap} mix my own colors , so easy to work with and cheaper than dirt. Holds right to un-primed plastic and never leaves a sticky - shiny surface always a nice flat finish. Great for washes and highlighting too. Oils and thinners? Yuck:oops:........................Jim;)View attachment 118137

I will never use rubber tracks again unless I have no choice, I find individual links quite relaxing and they do look great especially the fit around the sprockets.

Great work on the track links so far Peter they do make a difference when completed

I would too, if it looks better it's worth the effort in the long run...
