discussion Metalic chip marks

Hi folks

I'm currently building a 1:72 stuka in desert camo from the libyan campaign and im thinking about giving it a bit of a battle scarred look.

One way i want to do this is create a metalic chip effect to mimic pieces of flak schrapnel ricoched off the aircraft. Im quite confident with burn marks and engine fumes but never created metalic chipping effect before.

Would it be as simple as painting a metalic steel undercoat and then using some kind of abrasive device on the top finished coat to reveal the metal underneath?

All suggestions welcome

Should also add, im a brush painter using acrylics but planning on using my AK interactive steel paint which is oil based

As your are using a brush, maybe a coat of aluminium, let it dry for a day or two, put your top coat on, and before it has dried, pick at it with a pin of something similar. I was going to say try the hair spray method, but scale and brushes might work against you.

You could also like Colin says paint it aluminium, then let it dry then dab some maskol, or any masking fluid you've got on it. If you don't have any masking fluid try little blobs of PVA. then when that's dry paint the top colour. then when that's dry just wipe off the masking fluid, and there's your chips.

Or you could get a silver pencil and just stab some marks on the paint until you think you've done enough.

What about a little "sponge-chipping" with silver/aluminium?
