Joined my local IPMS club (South East Essex) last month.Second meeting tonight and I've entered my Sea Gladiator in the monthly competition.First competition I've entered since I was a teen.Fingers crossed it does well.

We have one out here in western canada too, also the International Plastic Modellers Society. Which I want to petition them to change their title to "International Society of Plastic Modellers", because in the first version it's the "PMS" part that jumps out at me. By scrambling the letters, it's less likely to produce childish giggling. (i think).

Yes it is quite exciting.Unfortunately I didn't win.My class was won by a Trumpeter 1/48 Skywarrior.Dwarfs my poor little Gladiator next to it.Oh well, there's always next month

What are those meets like Dave?
My club meets in Southend branch of the Royal Navy Association.About 25 blokes mostly aged 40 plus and one teen.Friendly bunch.Chatted about each other's models and the Telford show.Theres a chap who deals in models and brings the latest ones for us to take out of the boxes and have a look at.Tonight he had the new 1/48 Mig Foxbat amoungst others.I bought a Classic Airframes Defiant and Heinkel HE51 off him for £10 each.

I was going to go to my local one this month but couldn't get my shift swapped.

Better luck for next months competition.

Thanks.Al the members each vote for the models they think are best in each class. Then the votes are added up and the one with the most wins.In my class I voted for an Airfix Spitfire mk19 in Swedish markings. It was better than my model and the winning Skywarrior in my opinion.Others may have been drawn to the Skywarrior because it was so big and dominated the table.Perhaps I should build my 1/48 Lancaster or b24 Liberator next!.

I think you need to be either an exceptionally good modeller or the only entrant in your chosen class to win at my local IPMS. The military vehicles class is very very high quality, likewise the 1/72 and smaller aircraft. But it's great to see the work of others......and we have a bar.

Sorry you didn't win Dave and I agree do a big build next month ,

I take it the sections aren't by scale but by aircraft , armour and such

I think that's a little unfair really because large builds you can make weathering and detain more prominent

Am I still right in thinking the IPMS still only allow the use of plastic? So any other medium is not allowed? If this is the case it is what would put me off. I enjoy modeling in any way I see fit and not to comply with a set of rules and I think as such media as PE becomes more and more widely used they need to move with the times a bit quicker.

It's just a bit of fun really and a chance to look at and discuss other peoples work.

Back in the 60's I joined our local IPMS branch and went to all the monthly meetings. I thought I had picked up several good ideas/tips so after several months I entered my very first completion. This was to be my last as well

I entered a 1/72 ME 109 that had had been converted with the RR Engine. I had spent many hours looking at photo's, checking colours etc. and was proud of my endeavours.

Imagine my dismay when the Judge on taking a cursory glance at my pride & joy made the comment, 'It looks as though a child has glued a spitfire nose on this Messerschmitt and painted the nose yellow' and walked on.

No constructive criticism, just dismissive.

As one of the local model shops was already using some of my models in his main window display, I didn't think my efforts were that bad!

I decided then that I no longer wanted to be a member of a group who considered themselves elitist.

That's why I enjoy being on this forum, any criticism is constructive and helpful.

Rant over.

Gregg

I understand what you mean Gregg.I don't normally do clubs of any kind.In my experience too they can be elitist. But I thought I would give his one a go.Ive been to Two meetings so far and apart from one or two they seem a friendly bunch.I prefer to be complimentary of other peoples models and if I think they are crap I just won't say anything. To me it's just a hobby and I'd like to share it with like minded friendly people.Which is why I became a member of this site.

As you say Dave, I'm not a 'club' person either, but have been tempted to seek out a local club, but we'll see.

Hi Dave,

Sorry to hear you didn't win anything, shame they don't not only have a class, but a size class also, everyone always likes the large models, but, people often forget that sometimes more time can be spent on the smaller kits to get everything looking right...

Anyway, better luck next time...

Andy...
